Lewis Hamilton surged to the top in the final free practice session at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, setting a blistering lap time that denied Ferrari a clean sweep despite their dominance earlier in the weekend. The British driver clocked a 1m34.893s in the closing 20 minutes, becoming the sole competitor to break the 1m35s barrier and edging out Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc ahead of qualifying.

Ferrari had stamped their authority on Friday by leading both initial sessions, but Hamilton’s late surge in FP3 interrupted their perfect run at the Circuit of The Americas. Leclerc, who once held a 0.083-second advantage over Hamilton during a qualifying simulation, saw his best time deleted for exceeding track limits at Turn 10, relegating him to third place, 0.234 seconds off Hamilton’s pace, with his medium-tyre time standing as his best valid lap.
Max Verstappen secured second place, trailing Hamilton by a slim 0.168 seconds. Red Bull showed impressive speed in the first sector, but the Dutchman grappled with gearbox downshifting issues and suffered a wheel lock-up in the session’s final phase, hindering his rhythm.
Mercedes found themselves a notch behind in pure pace, with championship leader Kimi Antonelli finishing fourth, 0.303 seconds adrift. Team mate George Russell followed in fifth, 0.488 seconds behind. Antonelli also had a lap invalidated for exceeding limits at Turn 9, mirroring Leclerc’s penalty.
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri impressed by claiming sixth place at the helm of the challenging MCL40, while Lando Norris was eighth after losing a lap to track limit infringements at Turn 10. Between the McLaren duo, Nico Hulkenberg delivered a strong performance in the Audi, slotting in seventh thanks in part to rivals’ lap deletions.
Pierre Gasly rounded out the top ten for Alpine, more than a second off the pace, while Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar struggled with car behaviour and traffic, expressing frustration over interference from Alex Albon on the radio.
Traffic congestion and track limit violations plagued the session, triggering numerous lap deletions. A notable incident involved Hamilton and Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto. Hamilton voiced his displeasure with Bortoleto’s actions amid traffic, an incident now under stewards’ review.
The session’s top ten times were as follows:
1. Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) – 1m34.893s 2. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) – +0.168s 3. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) – +0.234s 4. Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) – +0.303s 5. George Russell (Mercedes) – +0.488s 6. Oscar Piastri (McLaren) – +0.638s 7. Nico Hulkenberg (Audi) – +0.698s 8. Lando Norris (McLaren) – +0.813s 9. Pierre Gasly (Alpine) – +1.011s 10. Isack Hadjar (Red Bull) – +1.037s
Hamilton’s late-session charge not only disrupted Ferrari’s hold but also set the stage for a fiercely competitive qualifying, underscored by the ongoing battle for track limits and traffic management. The stewards’ forthcoming decisions on the various incidents, including Hamilton and Bortoleto’s clash, could further shape the grid for the USGP showdown.
