Garth Good has questioned the reasons behind his sacking as Diss Town manager, with the former boss claiming his departure was not football-related after a recent upturn in results.
Good was dismissed following Diss's 1-0 victory over Newmarket Town Reserves, with the club’s board saying it believes a change is needed to help the squad fulfil its potential and compete for a play-off place.
The former boss, who took charge in the summer of 2023, said he was shocked by the decision, particularly after what he felt was an improvement in performances and results.
“It was the shock – that’s the first thing I’d say,” said Good. “Anytime someone departs, there’s always a reason. Sometimes that reason is football-based, sometimes not. Unfortunately, the evidence suggests it’s not a football-based one.”
Good claimed that disagreements over the committee’s involvement in player recruitment had contributed to his departure.
He said: “In the summer, the committee wanted to be involved in who could and couldn’t come to this football club. I didn’t agree to it. I’m not saying they haven’t got an important role in the club, they have, but I don’t get involved in their lane, and they don’t get involved in mine."
He argued the timing of the decision was significant, given the team’s recent run of five wins in eight matches after a difficult start to the campaign.
“We started poorly, and if I’d been sacked in August, it would have been for a football reason,” he said. “I’d have still felt it was harsh. We then went on to win five of our next eight games and only after that they wanted to move to a different manager.
“It was a very shrewd move from the committee. They didn’t replace me when things were chaos, they waited until we were competing. So now, the person who takes over is walking into a team winning 63 per cent of the time.”
However, the club said its decision followed an inconsistent start to the season. A statement read: “The board of directors of Diss Town Football Club has made the difficult decision to seek a new management team for the first team.
“Following an inconsistent start to the current season, the board believes a change is needed to help our talented squad fulfil its potential. Our ambition remains unchanged: to compete for a play-off place at the end of the season.
“Under the leadership of Garth Good, the team reached the play-off semi-finals in the 2024/25 season. Although we hoped to build on that achievement last season, results fell short of expectations, with the team spending much of the campaign in the lower half of the table.
“We sincerely thank Garth and his management team for their hard work, commitment and dedication to Diss Town Football Club. We appreciate their contribution and wish them every success in their future football careers.
“The first-team manager position has been advertised, and we will announce an appointment in due course.”
Good guided Diss to an eighth-placed finish in his first season, their highest league position since 2016/17, before securing a play-off place the following campaign. They lost in the semi-finals before finishing 17th last term.
Despite the circumstances of his departure, Good said he had nothing but praise for his players and hoped they would remain at the club.
He said: “It’s a shame with how it’s ended and the manner of it, but that’s football. I’ve got nothing but praise for the players. I’ve asked them all to be loyal to the club. I hope they stay and help the club progress.”
Good has also already received interest from other clubs, but said he would not rush into his next role.
He added: “I’ve had a few clubs contact me and want to have a chat. It’s a balancing act as you always want to get back, but you need to make sure it’s the right job. If it presents itself, I’ll be straight back in, but I’m not going to rush into anything.”
Diss return to action tomorrow when they travel to Holbeach United (3pm).
