Angel Reese continues to make history as she becomes the third player in the WNBA to score at least 30 points and 15 rebounds in a Finals game.
On Monday (October 19), the Atlanta Dream defeated the Golden State Valkyries on their turf, 79-65, during game 2 of the finals.
Also during the game, Reese scored 30 points and 16 rebounds. This makes Reese the third player in a Finals game to hit these stats. She now joins Breanna Stewart for Seattle in 2020 and Jonquel Jones for Connecticut in 2019.
At 24 years and 166 days old, Reese is now the youngest player in WNBA history with a game of at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in the Finals.
Reese reacted to the historic win with USA Sports, she said:
“You know, it’s funny. Them two [Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones] told me to go get. They told me to keep going and pushing though [at] that last game in New York. So, shout out to them. But, I’m just doing whatever it takes to win. This environment is tough to play in. Shout out to the fans. Shout out to my team, though. We came and fought. I mean, that Game 1 was tough for us. But, we moved on and turned the page and got back to who we are.”
When asked about her and her team’s mindset coming into Game 2 and having her mentors pour into her, Reese said:
“Yeah, doing the little things. Being intentional with every detail. We watched film and saw the things that we messed up on. When I said that, ‘They didn’t do anything to mess us up, it was literally just us.’ And we can see that tonight. And we’re gonna carry that over in Atlanta. Atlanta, y’all better pull up and pop out. I’m looking forward to it… [My mentors] mean everything to me. I’ve watched them. I’ve admired them for all these years and they walked so I can run. So, I’m just super grateful to be in this moment. Thank you for all of them, who inspire me and continue to keep pushing. I’m in year three, but I deserve to be here. We deserve to be here. And go Dream!”
Reacting to the game, Valkyries center Kiah Stokes said, “She was definitely way more aggressive, she had a great game. We let everyone kind of have their way.” Game 3 will take place in Atlanta, Georgia on Wednesday (October 21).
