Joao Pedro’s absence from Chelsea’s game against Tottenham has left fans with more questions than answers, perhaps even more than Danny Welbeck not being his direct replacement.
Xabi Alonso confirmed the forward’s absence when the team sheet was released, although rumours had already begun circulating on Friday after several Chelsea fans transferred him out of their Fantasy Premier League teams.
The forward reportedly felt something during training the previous day, with fluid around the injury raising further concerns. Further tests are needed to establish the extent of the problem, but no diagnosis or timeline for his return has been provided by official Chelsea sources.
That leaves supporters to interpret the lack of detail in one of two ways: either there is no immediate cause for concern, or Chelsea simply do not yet know the full extent of the problem.
Both interpretations are plausible, so we look at the arguments for optimism and the reasons for concern.
Looking at things from a positive perspective, there has been no confirmation that the injury is serious. Alonso said further tests are needed, suggesting the problem is still being assessed rather than having been diagnosed as a long-term issue.
While I’m no medical practitioner, fluid around an injury does not automatically mean a lengthy absence, and Pedro was only ruled out the day before the match. That could point to a precautionary decision just as easily as a major setback.
Alonso’s tone during his pre-match press conference was also measured rather than alarmed. He described Pedro’s absence as a disappointment but stressed that the team had to carry on. Meanwhile, the situation has given Geovany Quenda his first Premier League start, and Alonso’s praise for the youngster’s qualities suggests Chelsea have a capable alternative ready to step up.
Fluid around an injury can indicate damage to a joint or ligament, although it is too early to draw any firm conclusions about the severity of Pedro’s problem. The lack of a diagnosis could mean the swelling needs to subside before doctors can properly assess the damage, leaving Chelsea waiting for clearer answers.
The fact that news of his absence emerged through reports of fans transferring him out of their Fantasy Premier League teams rather than dropping to the bench also adds to the uncertainty. There is a possibility that the Brazilian could be sidelined for an extended period, potentially missing games beyond the next international break, although there is currently no confirmation of that scenario.
Pedro has been central to Chelsea’s attack, and losing him for any significant length of time would test the depth Alonso has built within his squad. His absence against Tottenham was a reminder of what Chelsea lack without him leading the line.
Until the scan results arrive, the uncertainty surrounding his fitness remains a major concern.
