Major Celtic Injury Concern Emerges

Mika Baur appeared to leave the pitch with a thigh issue during Celtic’s 4-1 defeat to Benfica, according to German outlet Kicker.

The midfielder started at the Estádio da Luz as Martin O’Neill’s side looked to respond from their opening Europa League defeat to Ferencvaros.

It turned into a rough night for Celtic, with Benfica 3-0 up by half-time before Camilo Durán pulled one back after the break.

Kicker noted during their live match coverage that Baur left the pitch with his thigh bandaged.

The German outlet wrote:“Baur now leaves the pitch with a bandaged thigh.”

That will be one for Celtic to assess ahead of Sunday’s league match against Hearts.

Baur had started brightly in Lisbon, carrying the ball forward early on and helping create one of Celtic’s first chances of the night.

He drove through midfield before finding Kasper Høgh, whose effort from a tight angle was saved by Anatoliy Trubin.

Baur then had a shot of his own kept out as Celtic tried to settle after falling behind to Jhon Durán’s early penalty.

The game moved away from Celtic before the break, though, with Alexander Bah scoring at the back post before Jhon Durán added Benfica’s third.

O’Neill changed the shape and energy of the team after half-time, first sending on Haissem Hassan and Callum Osmand before later introducing Oxlade-Chamberlain and Nygren.

But any injury concern around Baur would be another frustration after a damaging European night.

Celtic already have work to do in the Europa League after losing their first two league phase matches, and O’Neill will now need to see who is fit enough to go again at Tynecastle.

The Hearts game comes quickly, and Baur’s condition will be worth watching after that Kicker note from Lisbon.
