Gerrard puts major Rangers theory to the test as he's eyed for new job

The former Rangers boss is reportedly “open” to talks about taking charge of the Welsh club if owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney decide to change managers.

It comes a year after he held talks over a stunning Ibrox return as his sabbatical from the dugout appears to be nearing the end.

Wrexham chiefs are said to be assessing alternative candidates as pressure grows on current manager Phil Parkinson after a difficult start to the Championship campaign, according to talkSPORT.

Parkinson has become a club legend after leading Wrexham’s rise through the English football pyramid. However, the club is struggling to make an impact in the second tier and is sitting down the table.

That has led to questions about whether a change in leadership is needed to keep Wrexham’s Premier League ambition alive.

Gerrard is believed to be high on the club’s list of possible replacements, a year after he walked away from a proposed return to Rangers following talks with the club’s new regime.

The Liverpool icon has been out of work since leaving Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in January 2025. He has been linked with several management vacancies during his time away from football.

Gerrard enjoyed major success at Rangers, ending Celtic’s decade-long dominance by guiding the club to the Premiership title during the unbeaten 2020-21 campaign.

His time at Aston Villa was more difficult, but he remains one of Britain’s best-known young managers.

A move to Wrexham would bring further attention to a club whose rise has attracted supporters around the world. The side has progressed from non-league football to become contenders in the English game.

For now, Parkinson remains in charge at the Racecourse Ground. Results are under scrutiny, while expectations remain high.

Wrexham’s owners must decide whether to continue with the manager who led the club’s rise or appoint someone else to pursue their Premier League goal.

Any move for Gerrard would signal further ambition, but no decision has been announced.

It comes a year after he admitted Ibrox was the ideal place for him and confessed he uses his time in Glasgow as a yardstick to compare against other jobs.

The Liverpool icon, who held serious talks with Ibrox chiefs before Danny Rohl was appointed, admitted the pressure cooker of life at Rangers was the ideal place for him.

Speaking on The Smiths Brothers podcast, Gerrard said: "I think I suit a certain job; the passionate crowd - I need to try and feed off that. Something has to match my skillset, if you know what I mean.

"I am looking for the right match. Rangers was perfect, I was really close to going up there again. It's just the timing and a few other situations that weren't aligned.

"Rangers is my type of club - the fans, the passion, you can feed off it. It certainly suits the way that I go about it, but if something doesn't come or something where I feel like I can compete for the prizes I am comfortable to do what I am doing."
