Marco Jansen reached 100 Test wickets as South Africa fought back against Australia on day two of the third Test at Newlands on Wednesday.
The left-arm quick claimed two wickets during the afternoon session to help restrict Australia to 191-4 at tea, still trailing the Proteas’ first-innings total of 329 by 138 runs.
Jansen’s milestone came during another impressive display with the ball, continuing his fine form in a series that has seen him make important contributions with bat and ball.
The 26-year-old followed up his landmark wicket with another breakthrough shortly before tea, dismissing Matt Renshaw to give South Africa a timely boost.
Simon Harmer also played his part as the Proteas chipped away at Australia’s batting line-up in a hard-fought session.
Jansen had already made his presence felt on the opening day, scoring 52 in a crucial 95-run seventh-wicket partnership with Ryan Rickelton (42).
Their stand helped South Africa recover from 232-6 before Mitchell Starc ripped through the lower order to finish with 6-72.
Marques Ackerman top-scored for the Proteas with 95, while Aiden Markram contributed 78 and David Bedingham made 50.
With the three-match series level at 1-1, South Africa will be looking to press home their advantage in the final session as both teams chase a series victory.
