Manchester City 3-2 Ipswich Town - Issa Diop on Etihad Stadium defeat

Daizen Maeda’s quick counter cancelled out Phil Foden’s opener, but a brace from Erling Haaland meant that Zian Flemming’s late penalty was purely a consolation.

“I think our first half wasn't as good as we wanted,” Diop said. “But then we came back better in the second half, and I think we showed a better face.

“Unfortunately we couldn't get back on scoresheet and get points here.

“We know the quality they have. They have big players. They have been on top of the league for many years, so we knew what to expect today.

“We did alright, we could have done better but now it's too late. Now we focus on the game on Friday.”

Asked whether the players felt frustrated or proud of their display, Diop replied: “I think it's a bit of both.

“After a game, when you lose, you're always frustrated and sad.

“But then when we're going to have a look at it, we're going to see stuff that we did well.

“There's always good stuff to take from the game like that, especially against a team like this.

“I think we can work on it.”

The game saw Ipswich switch from their usual 4-2-3-1 formation to a 3-4-2-1, playing with three centre-backs and wing-backs.

Diop felt that it wasn’t a major change for most of his team-mates, which helped them adapt quickly after a week on the training pitch.

“I think most of the players already played in a back five before,” he explained. “It was just some small adjustments to do.

“It wasn't something really different. As I said, we all played in a back five before. So it was just small adjustments.”

The Blues can move on with their heads held high. Crucial games against Nottingham Forest (H), Hull City (A) and AFC Bournemouth (H) await.

“We're looking forward to getting back at Portman Road against Forest,” he concluded. “It's going to be another tough game.

“We know that, and we're ready to play on Friday.”
