Man Utd target Premier League star for January transfer after suffering huge injury blow

Manchester United are set to be without Benjamin Sesko until at least January due to injury, leaving the Red Devils short up front, and a striker is on their shortlist

Manchester United are weighing up a surprise move for Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the January transfer window. Calvert-Lewin, 29, is enjoying his second season at Leeds and scored one of his five goals this season against the Red Devils in this month's 1-1 draw at Elland Road.

The England international bagged 15 in his first campaign after leaving Everton on a free transfer and has proven his fitness with Daniel Farke's side. Leeds are already keen to offer him a new contract, with his current deal due to expire in 2028, but United are now circling.

According to The Athletic, Calvert-Lewin is under consideration at Old Trafford as they target a striker. It follows this week's news that Benjamin Sesko, who led the line for the Red Devils last term, will be out until at least January because of a shin injury.

Sesko is one of only four United players to have scored a Premier League goal this season, despite his minimal game time. "Unfortunately, Ben looks like he's going to be out for a period of time," Carrick confirmed on Thursday.

"We're still not clear on exactly how long but it's going to be a longer period of time. "It was the process and, as I said to you before, we had to go through the process, a bit of a healing process for the injury, to see how it would react, in what direction to go with that.

"So, even now, we're still working through it but, yeah, it's unfortunate. Obviously, first and foremost, for Ben, for the kind of period that he's had and tried to get through it. Going through this again, and for us to not have him available, is obviously a blow, but we'll try to get him back as quick as we can."

As things stand, however, a move for Calvert-Lewin is thought to be unlikely, especially in the winter window. Leeds and the Red Devils share a bitter rivalry and deals between the two clubs are rare.

Karl Darlow notably made the switch to Old Trafford this summer but that was on a free transfer. Leeds last sold a player to the Red Devils in 2004, receiving £7million for Alan Smith.

Previously, Eric Cantona and Rio Ferdinand made the same move. Dan James is the most recent player to go the other way, with Leeds paying £25m plus add-ons in 2021.
