The Seattle Kraken bounced back Wednesday night after a four-goal loss to Calgary Oct. 30 to earn a 2-1 overtime win. Center Berkly Catton answered Flames forward Yegor Sharangovich’s first-period goal with Seattle’s only regulation goal, with 6:51 left, to force overtime. Matty Beniers scored in overtime to secure a win in the debut of the Kraken’s Hometown Remix jerseys.
It was a win by committee, and a fitting end to the season series with the Flames. Catton tied it, Kraken goalie Joey Daccord stopped two breakaways to keep it tied, and defender Brandon Montour came through twice: once to answer Flames forward Martin Pospisil, once to set up the game-winning goal.
In a game where the team delivered, Montour and Daccord shone brightest. One for his leadership, and one for his resilience.
Pospisil cemented his legacy as a Seattle Kraken villain Wednesday night. Pospisil, who was ejected from a March 2024 contest against the Kraken for a gnarly hit on Kraken defenseman Vince Dunn, made contact with Kraken goalie Joey Daccord twice. The hit in the third period resulted in his second interference call of the game, plus an additional two minutes for roughing. The latter resulted from his tangle with Montour.
“Monty steps up there, (Pospisil) can’t be running our goaltender like that. Monty does a good job putting him in his place a little bit,” Beniers told reporters postgame.
Monty’s steal and breakaway pass gave Matty Beniers and the Kraken the last laugh. Well, the last goal. After beating Beniers along the right wall, Matvei Gridin attempted to set up a one-timer for Matt Coronato in the left circle. Instead, Montour intercepted the pass and pushed the puck ahead for Beniers.
“That was probably the longest breakaway I’ve ever had, so there was a lot of ice,” the center joked on the eve of his 24th birthday. “(Montour) made a great play to intercept that and give it to me.”
Montour stepping up to protect his goalie was a much-needed boost for the team and Daccord. The Kraken had four days to stew after a 6-2 loss to Calgary on Oct. 30. Overcoming a slow start to get the overtime win and take the 3-1 season series over a division rival is significant as the Kraken seek to remain a top three team in the Pacific Division.
Seattle was unable to convert on two power play opportunities in the third. The team relied on eight of Daccord’s 25 saves in the final frame to send the game to overtime. Wenesday’s win marked the fourth win for the 30-year-old netminder in seven starts. Once the saving grace of the Kraken crease, Daccord is splitting time in net with 2018 Stanley Cup winner Philipp Grubauer.
While Grubauer dealt with injuries and varying degrees of confidence from the organization over the years, Daccord stepped up for the Kraken. This season has been a struggle for the Boston native. Through eight appearances, Daccord’s 3.53 goals-against average is the highest since his 4.50 GAA in his first five games in the inaugural season (2021-22). Daccord admitted to getting hyped up during the game, and especially after Beniers’ game-winning goal.
“I think it’s a huge win,” Daccord told reporters postgame from the Kraken locker room. “Big win tonight. Hopefully keep it going this weekend so we can feel good and enjoy that trip, and try to get some points over there.”
“It felt really good to make big saves, honestly,” Daccord said. He paused for a moment before continuing with, “I feel like I’ve been pushing myself to come up with a big save when the team needs it and to come up with two in the third period felt really good. I was fired up. I was celebrating a little bit internally,” he added.
With the win, Seattle is now 5-1-0 coming off a loss. Only six NHL teams have better records in games following a loss. The Kraken hosts the New York Rangers Saturday at 2 p.m. PT.
