Bid for new clubhouse at football ground in Lowestoft

The scheme, proposed by Waveney Football Club for its Saturn Close playing field in Lowestoft, aims to improve facilities for players and supporters.

Fresh plans have been submitted to East Suffolk Council by agents Lisa Allard for applicant Mr S Staniforth, on behalf of the football club.

The proposals, which are 'awaiting decision' with the council, earmark the "placing of a moveable (mobile building) clubhouse/classroom" facility for the football club at the Horizon School site on Saturn Close.

Documents said Waveney FC has used the grounds since it was founded in 1978 and now operates 63 teams that play across four sites in Lowestoft, supporting more than 600 players of all ages and abilities.

It states: "The proposed development is intended to provide much-needed indoor accommodation to support the long-established sporting and community use of the site."

The playing field is part of Horizon School which is licensed by Suffolk County Council to Waveney FC.

With the Saturn Close pitch used for senior and older youth football, the enhanced facilities would serve as a "much-needed indoor space for players, coaches, and supporters," with the proposed building also including a classroom area for training and meetings.

The football pitch and playing field are only used by Waveney FC outside normal school hours and on weekends.

But with "limited indoor facilities for players, coaches, supporters and family members attending matches," the proposed classroom and clubhouse would provide an indoor space where people can watch matches during poor weather.

The new clubhouse would also provide a facility for post-game gatherings.

Documents said: "At present, senior teams have no suitable facility at Saturn Close for post-match refreshments and social activities and consequently have to relocate to the nearby Dutchman public house after matches.

"The proposed clubhouse would allow these activities to remain within the football facility itself and provide a more convenient, inclusive and family-friendly environment."

With the proposals set to provide a "significant improvement" to the facilities currently available, and parking not expected to be affected, the development will "support the long-term sustainability of an important local sporting organisation."

A decision from East Suffolk Council is expected in the coming weeks.
