FOOTBALL - Frank Lampard feels Coventry City 'are growing' despite Tottenham Hotspur defeat

FRANK Lampard feels his Coventry City players ‘are growing’ despite suffering a 3-1 defeat away at Tottenham Hotspur.

Frank Lampard.

Goals from James Maddison, Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies condemned the Sky Blues to defeat on the club’s first-ever visit to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Coventry drew level early in the second half through Jack Rudoni but bottom side Spurs eventually reclaimed the lead to move off the foot of the table.

The defeat brings an end to Coventry’s two-game winning run in the Premier League but Lampard feel his side are continuing to grow as the season wears on.

Lampard said: “I’m disappointed to lose because the performance was really good. The goal at the end changes the story of the game.

“We were in it throughout, they scored two massive goals in terms of the quality of the finish. I thought the second one was a foul on Milan [van Ewijk] but it doesn’t get given.

“But the personality of the team and to play with the confidence to keep pushing, I was really happy with that, we kept going and the players gave everything.

“We never gave them clear openings in the game, we got a lot of things right against a high-quality team.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t get what I felt we deserved from the game. In terms of pure performance, I think we deserved something from this match.

“We have to keep this feeling and spirit of the team. It’s a team that’s very willing and I believe the quality of the players will grow.

“I think it’s growing in front of our eyes, in terms of how we’re working on the training ground and what they’re delivering on the pitch, let’s keep going with that.”

Coventry went into the game following successive victories against both Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest.

And Lampard felt his side deserved more from the game against Spurs and hopes his players will use the performance as a reference point for future games.

Lampard added: “We played with togetherness, confidence and quality and went toe-to-toe with them.

“The next bit is how do we get the wins like we did with Newcastle and Forest.

“The baseline has to be all the stuff we saw [against Tottenham] and I enjoyed seeing that from us.

“This performance was as good as Forest and Newcastle but you don’t get what you deserve because that’s football.”

Coventry are next in action against Fulham on Saturday, October 24 with kick-off at 3pm at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
