The Oklahoma Sooners have a unique challenge heading into Saturday's game against the Florida Gators. The Sooners enter the game not knowing who the Gators' quarterback will be.
This isn't because of an injury; it's because of how the two have played. Aaron Philo has started most of the games this season. He came to Florida with offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner from Georgia Tech. He's completed 70.5% of his passes for 1,367 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions. The other quarterback is Tramell Jones Jr. He's completed 70.8% of his passes for 579 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions this season. He started one game when Philo was unavailable, knocking off the Texas Longhorns.
Both of the quarterbacks played against the Georgia Bulldogs. Philo started and completed 5-of-7 passes for 26 yards and two interceptions. Jones replaced him and completed 18-of-25 passes for 172 yards and one interception. Head coach Brent Venables broke down the differences between the two quarterbacks and how the scheme helps them out.
"They're both very good players," Venables said. "I think, systematically, they ask them to do similar things. Philo's had more experience in the system, coming with Buster Faulkner from Georgia Tech. Both can run. Both are excellent throwers. They put the quarterback on the move and put a ton of pocket movement. They both throw the ball really, really well."
Oklahoma's preparation will have to account for both quarterbacks rather than focusing on one specific player. While Philo has more experience in Florida's system, Jones has already shown he can step into a difficult matchup and lead the Gators to a big win. Their similar skill sets also mean the Sooners cannot expect a completely different offensive approach depending on who takes the first snap.
