Dylan Larkin has made it clear that he no longer wants to wear a Detroit Red Wings jersey and is willing to lose a massive amount of money as he waits to be dealt elsewhere.
Almost five months after Larkin's trade request away from the Red Wings became public, the 30-year-old star took the next step, declaring that he would no longer play for Detroit as he waits for a trade. The decision to sit out games came down to Larkin and his camp believing the Red Wings had enough time to find a trade partner.
As he waits for a new home aside from the only one he's known since being drafted in 2014, Larkin is willing to take a massive cut to his paycheck in order to force Detroit's hand.
Pat Brisson, Larkin's agent, claimed that the star has "had enough of the situation" and told the team he will no longer play for them. In turn, Red Wings Interim General Manager Shawn Horcoff has suspended the star without pay, as both sides look for a proper resolution.
As a result, ESPN estimates Larkin will lose more than $41,000 per day as he continues his standoff with the organization.
In a statement, Horcoff noted that while the organization will do what it can to honor Larkin's wishes, the franchise's needs take center stage in any potential deal.
"Dylan Larkin has informed us that he will no longer play for the Detroit Red Wings," the statement began. "We are disappointed by his decision, particularly given his obligations to the organization and his teammates. We have therefore suspended Dylan without pay.
"We will continue to explore trade opportunities involving Dylan. In addition to needing his approval, any trade must also be in the best interests of the Detroit Red Wings and support the organization's long-term goals.
"I want to thank and commend our coaches and players for their continued focus, and being committed to competing every day."
Despite the statement, Brisson noted that he believes Larkin has been "very professional and cooperative through this process."
As for the teams Larkin is willing to waive his full no-trade clause for, they are the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, Dallas Stars, Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes, Utah Mammoth, Tampa Bay Lightning, New Jersey Devils, and Colorado Avalanche, according to The Athletic.
