Troy Aikman has been a major talking point on Monday Night Football due to his ongoing contract dispute with ESPN. It looks like he’ll be on the job market in the offseason, and after having a long pregame talk with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, fans are calling for Jones to consider giving Aikman a look for a significant front office role next year.
Jones and Aikman’s history stretches back to 1989, when Jones bought the Cowboys, and Dallas selected Aikman with the No. 1 overall pick. Together, they were part of three Super Bowl championships, with Aikman quarterbacking every title team of Jones’ tenure. The two reunited on the field before Monday night’s game for an extended conversation.
“A very, very lengthy conversation between Jerry Jones and Cowboys great Troy Aikman — one that lasted nearly 10 minutes,” shared Cowboys writer Patrik Walker.
Fans began to wonder what the pair were talking about for so long. They pitched the idea of giving Aikman the chance to run the team and restore it to glory.
“I want Aikman for our general manager with full control, no interference by Jerry, and no more press conferences or interviews with Jerry. Everything needs to be Aikman as the face of the franchise and making all decisions,” said one fan.
“It’s only right to let Troy run the show. He’s a winner,” said another fan.
He has never coached in the NFL and has only limited front-office experience, having worked as a consultant for the Miami Dolphins during their 2026 general manager and head-coaching searches.
Of course, he knows how to win in the NFL as a player and with the Cowboys, but whether that would translate remains to be seen. Yet it’s not affecting Cowboys fans’ desire to see Aikman in charge.
“Please let him run the team in some capacity next year, Jerry,” wrote a fan.
“Right your wrongs Jerruh and give him the keys to the ship,”said another fan.
The Cowboys have a lot to figure out, which has put head coach Brian Schottenheimer under pressure.
The Dallas defense ranks dead last in PFN’s Defense Impact Metric with a grade of 61.6. They commit plenty of penalties, and the coaching is poor. Dallas is headed toward having to hire a whole new staff, and that would be the time to potentially bring in Aikman to run the show as the team’s general manager.
