Amanda Serrano Deserves Farewell Despite Weak Skye Falzon Matchup

Amanda Serrano’s sendoff against Skye Falzon relies on nostalgia rather than pure sporting drama. Falzon brings regional hardware and a top ranking, yet lacks proven elite credentials. What we get is a routine title defense tied to a historic milestone, an arrangement Serrano has fully earned.

Serrano wraps up her legendary run on January 9 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, streaming live on DAZN. Holding belts across seven divisions, ruling undisputed at featherweight, and enduring three grueling battles with Katie Taylor means she has nothing left to prove. Still, every fight card deserves an honest look for what it actually presents.

You can understand the business calculation from Serrano’s camp: after twenty years, seven divisions, and the physical toll of three wars with Taylor, the desire to cash a final check without risking a bad knockout or a tainted scorecard makes self-preservation sense. But for fans who actually value real drama over a victory lap, it feels empty. Ending on a layup preserves the record, but it rarely produces the kind of memorable final high note people talk about years down the road.

Falzon sports a 12-2 record with seven stoppages, holding the WBA Asia and Oceania featherweight belts. Ranked fourth by the WBA, her paperwork checks out, yet those regional honors offer very little reason to expect a competitive scrap.

Her most recent outing saw her cruise past Monika Singh on September 11 with three matching 99-91 cards. Her only losses came early, dropping bouts to Sarah Watt in December 2021 and Pam McClelland in July 2022. She brings decent momentum, but regional dominance leaves one massive question looming over the ring: what happens once Serrano starts connecting?

That gap exposes the promotion’s biggest flaw. Sanctioning bodies provide official stamps, not guaranteed entertainment. Falzon has the numbers, but nothing suggests she can truly trouble the champ.

Nobody can fault Falzon for taking the call. Any fighter chasing a world crown would be crazy to turn down a golden ticket just because critics consider them outgunned.

“One last fight. One last walk. One final chapter,” Serrano posted on X. “Boxing has given me everything. It’s taken me around the world, allowed me to chase dreams I once thought were impossible, and given me the opportunity to inspire the next generation of fighters.”

That said, nothing is completely guaranteed inside the ropes. Serrano had to grind out a close majority decision over Lucrecia Manzur during her last defense. That showing proves that any slight dip in sharpness matters, even against an opponent with a lighter record.

At its core, the main attraction remains untouched. Puerto Rico gets to salute its greatest warrior. That moment means something, so there is no reason to pretend Falzon is a monster test. Serrano gets her well-earned homecoming, while supporters get an honest look at the match in front of them.
