LSU gained the commitment of five-star guard Reese Alston on Thursday, making him the third high school recruit to join coach Will Wade’s 2027 recruiting class.
The 6-foot-2, 175-pound point guard announced his decision live on the CBS Sports College Basketball YouTube Channel Thursday.
Alston is the No. 9 player overall and No. 3 point guard in the 2027 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite. He picked the Tigers over a final list that includes Kentucky, Tennessee, Louisville and Wichita State.
He said he chose LSU because it felt like home during his visit and that, in a short time knowing Wade, he is comfortable playing for him.
“The trust I have with coach Wade,” Alston said. “I'm not even his player yet. You know, we've known each other for like a couple months, but we've been through so much already. He's stuck by my side. Even through everything we've been through already, so I know that a couple losses and a couple turnovers won't ruin our relationship.”
His father is New York streetball legend and former 12-year NBA player Rafer Alston, also known as “Skip to My Lou.” He played at Fresno State before being drafted 39th overall in the 1998 NBA Draft. Alston averaged 10.1 points and 4.8 assists per game for his career.
Reese Alston, also known as “Lil Skip,” attends Second Baptist in Houston and first received an LSU offer from previous coach Matt McMahon and his staff on Oct. 9, 2025. He last visited the program Sept. 3.
Alston averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 2.7 steals last year in 34 games as a junior. He also shot 61% from the field, 34% from the 3-point line and 71% from the free-throw line. He led his school to back-to-back TAPPS 5A State Championships. He was also awarded MVP of the PRO16 League, the AAU basketball circuit for PUMA.
LSU’s newest commit was asked to describe the type of player fans will see when he comes to Baton Rouge.
“The player that they can expect is just a fun, high, energetic player,” Alston said. “The way coach Wade plays and his system was the main reason. Pick and rolls. High, fast pace, getting out in transition. So, they can expect a lot. Energetic player, energetic style of play.”
The two other commits LSU has in the 2027 class are 6-5 guard King Gibson and 6-7 forward Ahmad Hudson. Gibson is the No. 15 player and No. 3 combo guard, according to the 247Sports Composite. He became the first five-star prospect to commit to the program since Will Wade added center Efton Reid, who was the No. 20 player in the 2021 class, according to ESPN.
Hudson is the No. 24 player and No. 3 power forward, according to the 247Sports Composite. He plays at Ruston and also committed to LSU as a football player on May 3.
Hudson is also the No. 1 tight end and the No. 23 football player in the country, according to ESPN. In May, he said he plans on playing both sports in college. However, he might flip to Nebraska after reportedly visiting Nebraska on Saturday, making his second visit since committing to LSU.
Before Alston’s commitment, ESPN rated LSU’s recruiting class as No. 4 in the country
The Tigers play their first game of the season against LSU New Orleans Wednesday at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
