‘Haven’t Completely Abandoned the Idea’ — NFL Insiders Reveal NFC Team’s Stance on Potentially Adding Brandon Aiyuk

Brandon Aiyuk’s future with the San Francisco 49ers remains uncertain as the NFL trade deadline approaches.

With Washington still considering the wide receiver, ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport have shared a fresh update on the Commanders’ stance, with injuries to its receiving corps potentially keeping the door open for a deal.

Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport Reveal Commanders’ Stance on Brandon Aiyuk

According to a joint report from ESPN’s Schefter and NFL Network’s Rapoport, Washington is still considering the possibility of acquiring the 28-year-old receiver.

“The Commanders haven’t completely abandoned the idea of adding wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who was rumored during the summer to end up in Washington, according to sources,” Schefter and Rapoport reported. “But before an Aiyuk deal were to happen, if it were to happen, the organization would have to have discussions with multiple people. It’s not a no, but it’s also not a yes just yet.”

The Commanders, ranked 26th overall with a 69.2 grade on PFN’s NFL Team Overall Impact, have several reasons to consider the move. They are 2-4-1 and third in the NFC East, with injuries creating major problems for their passing game.

Terry McLaurin has been ruled out for the season after suffering a torn patellar tendon. Meanwhile, Treylon Burks and Dyami Brown have also dealt with injury setbacks.

Adding Aiyuk could give Washington another experienced receiver, but the organization would need to carefully consider his situation before making a move.

Aiyuk’s Reinstatement Push Adds Another Layer to the Situation

Aiyuk’s future with the 49ers remains uncertain after a lengthy dispute with the organization.

The receiver has not played since suffering serious knee injuries, including a torn ACL and MCL, in October 2024. His relationship with San Francisco deteriorated following contract disagreements and a prolonged hold-in.

The 49ers eventually voided $27 million in guaranteed money for 2026 and placed him on the reserve/left squad list after he stopped participating in team activities.

Aiyuk recently hired prominent agent Drew Rosenhaus and filed paperwork seeking reinstatement to the NFL. The move has put pressure on San Francisco to determine his future, whether through a trade, release, or another resolution.

Aiyuk and Rosenhaus met with 49ers officials at the team’s business offices in Santa Clara on Friday, November 6. However, the meeting ended without an immediate resolution.

Rosenhaus offered a brief “To be continued” when asked about the situation, leaving Aiyuk’s next move unclear.

Financial and Legal Issues Could Complicate a Potential Trade

Even if Washington decides to pursue Aiyuk, several hurdles remain.

Reports indicate that the NFL informed Aiyuk he owes the 49ers approximately $13 million in forfeited bonuses. Any potential trade would also require the interested team to understand the contractual complications surrounding his situation.

Additionally, Aiyuk is dealing with off-field issues, including a reported active traffic-related arrest warrant.

These concerns could make the Commanders hesitant to take a chance on the receiver, especially with the trade deadline approaching.
