With the Indianapolis Colts potentially being sellers at this year's trade deadline, NFL insiders Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport highlighted five players who could end up elsewhere in the coming weeks.
Following the firing of GM Chris Ballard earlier in the week, Schefter and Rapoport took a look at where things stand for the Colts. In short, although the Colts are 2-4 at the moment, the assumed plan is that the team will attempt to turn things around.
However, if that plan fails and the Colts continue to lose, then they will shift their focus to the future.
"If it does not go well, new chief of personnel Ed Dodds, a long-time lieutenant of Ballard, will work in concert with Colts owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon and other members of the Indianapolis brass to deal resources and build for the future," Schefter and Rapoport wrote.
If the Colts do end up going down that path where they are looking to deal players, Schefter and Rapoport mentioned DeForest Buckner, Grover Stewart, Keenan Allen, and Quenton Nelson as trade candidates.
This doesn't come as a surprise, considering that all four are veteran players in the final year of their current deals and set to hit free agency in the offseason. If the season is a loss, the Colts should try to recoup some draft capital to begin their rebuild.
Schefter and Rapoport would also mention Jonathan Taylor as a trade candidate. He is already drawing some interest.
"The Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks, Minnesota Vikings, and Denver Broncos are among the teams that have, or are expected, to ponder the possibility of a trade for the star running back, according to sources," Schefter and Rapoport wrote.
Although the Colts did just sign Taylor to a two-year, $44 million contract extension just a few months ago, as ESPN's Dan Graziano noted, the recency of that deal does not make it impossible to trade the star running back, given how it is structured.
