An all-Turkish transfer battle has erupted for much-maligned Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana.

The Cameroon international has gone down as one of the biggest flop signings in the Red Devils' history. Brought in for €50 million to replace David de Gea in 2023 after starring for Inter in the Champions League, Onana was effectively persona non grata by 2025.

The 30-year-old committed numerous high-profile blunders during his time as the club's No. 1, to the point where his confidence was so shot that even his supposedly best asset - his ability with the ball at his feet - became a problem.

Although Onana had a spell where he actually performed quite well, it became clear last summer that the situation had become untenable. Senne Lammens was signed to effectively replace the shot-stopper.

Rather than sit on the bench, Onana found a last-minute escape route in Turkey. Trabzonspor took him on board for a season, and they surprisingly managed to keep him for an additional year this summer.

Onana to be sold

Heading into 2027, the plan is for Man Utd to finally sell Onana. The Cameroonian has managed to rebuild his career in Anatolia, with Trabzonspor reportedly keen to sign him permanently.

Reports have suggested that Man Utd could be willing to sell Onana for just €10m next summer, which is a massive change from some of the €30m-€40m fees bandied about earlier in the year.

Onana is believed to be happy at Trabzonspor, although whether he is prepared to stay permanently remains to be seen. When he initially joined, it was only seen as an intermediate step before a return to an elite European league.

The situation may have changed due to the ambition Trabzonspor have shown in the transfer market, most notably recruiting Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah. The team are also flying high under new manager Thomas Reis, who has won six out of six matches so far.

Worryingly for Trabzonspor, Onana's impressive form is also starting to attract other suitors. According to Africa Foot, Galatasaray are showing an interest in signing the 30-year-old next summer.

Ironically, it was Galatasaray who prompted Trabzonspor to sign Onana last year, as they poached their Super Lig rivals' goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakır for an eyebrow-raising €30m.

Man Utd need to sell Onana next year because his contract is up in 2028, so Galatasaray entering the race is great news for the Red Devils. What's better than a bidding war for an unwanted player?

However, the former Ajax man is believed to be in no rush to make a decision on his future. At present, Trabzonspor appear to have the better chances of signing him permanently, but a club like Galatasaray is difficult to turn down.

Regardless of where he might end up, just the fact that Onana now has a market again after a few difficult years is ideal for Man Utd, who need to finally cut their losses.
