HISTORY was made at Lisnaskea in September 1979 when Erne Gaels won their first New York Cup, snatching a last-minute victory over Teemore thanks to a remarkable goal from P J Daly.
With time almost up, the final appeared destined for a draw until the Teemore defence switched off and allowed Daly’s hopeful, lofted ball from outfield to bounce untouched into the net.
It was a costly blunder that secured Erne Gaels’ first senior county title, leaving Teemore with no time to recover, with the Belleek men winning 2-10 to 1-10.
The decisive goal provided a dramatic finish to a disappointing final that rarely reached the expected standard.
Nothing to separate them
Both sides struggled to find their rhythm, with spells of wasteful shooting and disjointed attacking play keeping the large attendance quiet for long periods.
Teemore opened the scoring through Seán Quinn, but Daly struck a goal for Erne Gaels before adding a point.
Ken Kennedy replied with a goal for the Shamrocks, who remained in contention despite failing to capitalise on several opportunities.
He then missed an excellent chance to score again, while John McCaffrey later saw an effort crash against the crossbar.
Gerry Rooney finished with five points for Erne Gaels, while midfielder Pat McCann impressed under the high ball.
Sean McCaffrey and Jim Ferguson also made important contributions in defence.
Teemore drew level through Benny Fitzpatrick in the 40th minute, setting up a tense finish.
The Shamrocks briefly looked capable of claiming their first title since 1975 after edging ahead with three points during their strongest spell.
However, Erne Gaels fought back to draw level before Daly’s extraordinary late goal settled the contest and secured a place in the club’s history.
