FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Two of the best football players ever from the Treasure Coast made an impact while sharing the same field for the first time as professionals Sunday.
And while Jensen Beach High School legend Jamien Sherwood had the better statistical day, Fort Pierce Central High School legend Gabe Jacas and his New England Patriots won the battle.
The Patriots came away with a 26-19 Week 6 victory at Gillette Stadium.
Each player had a hand in creating turnovers.
Sherwood pounced on a fumble after David Bailey stripped TreVeyon Henderson before the running back was down on a third-quarter rush. The takeaway led to a 36-yard field goal by Jason Sanders as the Jets pulled within 17-13.
With New England up 23-13 in the fourth quarter, Jacas made his most significant play, rushing off the right edge and pressuring Jets quarterback Geno Smith, who lofted an overthrown pass that was intercepted by Charles Woods.
Sherwood responded on the ensuing drive. Trailing the play, the veteran linebacker forced a fumble after stripping Patriots receiver Pop Douglas from behind following a long reception. The ball was recovered by Minkah Fitzpatrick. It was Sherwood's second forced fumble of the season and third of his career.
Sherwood finished with a game-high 11 tackles, a tackle for loss and a quarterback hit. Jacas, a rookie, recorded four tackles.
The AFC East rivals will meet again on Dec. 27 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
