Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior has been handed a four-match suspension by the Spanish football authorities following his dismissal during the club’s LaLiga match against Villarreal. The punishment is set to rule the Brazilian international out of the first El Clasico of the season against Barcelona, adding to the disciplinary controversy surrounding the incident.
The suspension follows Real Madrid’s 1-0 victory over Villarreal, during which Vinicius was sent off after an altercation involving Villarreal defender Nathan Saliba. The Brazilian was accused of pulling the defender’s hair, an incident that led to his dismissal and subsequent disciplinary proceedings.
The Spanish Football Federation’s disciplinary committee reportedly imposed a two-match ban for the red-card offence and a further two matches for protesting against the referee.
The incident occurred after Vinicius came on as a substitute against Villarreal. His confrontation with Saliba resulted in a red card, leaving the forward facing an extended spell on the sidelines.
Under the reported disciplinary decision, the punishment covers both the initial offence and his conduct towards the referee. The four-match suspension represents a significant setback for Real Madrid, who rely on Vinicius for his pace, creativity and ability to influence major matches.
The forward subsequently apologised to his teammates and supporters through social media, addressing the controversy after the Villarreal fixture.
The most significant consequence of the suspension is Vinicius’ expected absence from Real Madrid’s LaLiga meeting with Barcelona on October 25. The fixture, commonly known as El Clasico, is one of the most closely followed matches in world football.
According to reports, the ban also covers league fixtures against Sevilla, Racing Santander and Valencia. Missing these games would deprive Real Madrid of one of their most influential attacking players during an important stretch of the domestic campaign.
Vinicius’ absence could force the coaching staff to adjust their attacking options and redistribute responsibilities across the forward line. His direct running and ability to create chances in one-on-one situations have made him a key part of Madrid’s attacking approach.

The disciplinary decision also attracted attention because of its timing. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho reportedly criticised the announcement, describing it as “shameless” after the decision emerged only hours before the club’s Champions League match against Roma on October 14.
Mourinho questioned why the club and player were informed of such a significant decision so close to kick-off. Despite the controversy, Vinicius featured in Real Madrid’s reported 4-3 comeback victory over Roma. The timing of the announcement became a separate talking point, even as the suspension itself remained linked to the Villarreal incident.
Vinicius also attracted attention in India after featuring for Brazil in their international friendly against India in Kolkata on October 3. Brazil won the match 4-0 at Salt Lake Stadium. His appearance in that fixture brought the Brazilian star closer to Indian football supporters, making news of his suspension particularly relevant to fans who watched him play in Kolkata.
The four-match ban now places Vinicius’ disciplinary episode at the centre of attention ahead of El Clasico, with Real Madrid facing the prospect of taking on Barcelona without one of their leading attacking threats.
