With the NFL trade deadline approaching, all eyes are on the Indianapolis Colts, who have already traded away Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner. Jonathan Taylor, Josh Downs, and Grover Stewart are other names to watch in the coming days.
But as Adam Schefter detailed recently on his podcast, "The Adam Schefter Podcast," during this time of the year, you have to be on the lookout for the curveball. The example Schefter used was whether or not the Colts could trade QB Daniel Jones.
"I think the thing to watch at this time of the year with the trade deadline approaching, I'm watching players from those teams that are not talked about as much," Schefter said. "We're talking about Jonathan Taylor and Josh Downs, but what about Daniel Jones? ... What about Daniel Jones, like the Baltimore Ravens make a run at Daniel Jones? Could the Minnesota Vikings make a run at Daniel Jones?"
Schefter then said he's not reporting that a trade might be coming, but sometimes unexpected deals come up as the trade deadline nears.
"I know we're focused in on Taylor and Downs as we should be -- and I'm not telling you they're trading him, I'm just telling you sometimes it's the curveball that you don't see," Schefter added.
The two teams Schefter mentions, the Ravens and Vikings, have playoff aspirations but question marks at quarterback. Baltimore just placed Lamar Jackson on injured reserve, while the Minnesota offense has struggled to get going with Kyler Murray under center.
Jones, meanwhile, has struggled with turnovers, throwing nine interceptions while also losing a few fumbles. He's also completed just 60% of his passes and is averaging only 5.8 yards per pass attempt, well below last season's figure of 8.1 yards per throw.
That said, Shane Steichen pointed out this week that while Jones has to improve, so does the play around him.
The Colts signed Jones to a two-year, $88 million deal this past offseason,
