Chelsea’s men’s and women’s teams seem to be vying to see who can produce the most goals and generate the most entertainment after a weekend in which both turned on the style, writes Tim Harrison.
The men survived a bruising, tetchy encounter with hitherto unbeaten Everton, taking all three points in a clash which left goalie Emi Martinez in hospital, while the women produced an eight-goal thriller at Stamford Bridge, generating several contenders for goal of the season in the process.
If you can name more watchable sides than Chelsea’s first teams in the Premier League and Women’s Super League, I’ll eat my blue and white scarf.
Xabi Alonso’s fired-up first team travelled to the Hill Dickinson stadium for the Saturday lunchtime kick-off, and survived a concerted first-half assault (five players were booked in just 30 minutes) before Pedro Neto scored twice for the win.
As importantly, Chelsea finally achieved their first clean sheet since January, paving the way for the juicy prospect of the visit by Spurs this weekend.
Martinez, stretchered off in the second half following a crunching collision with Jarrad Branthwaite, has been operated on for a fractured jaw, and will miss the next six weeks.
Meanwhile Chelsea Women weathered an impressive display by Tottenham Hotspur Women at Stamford Bridge on Sunday lunchtime before surging to a 6-2 victory, with both Lauren James and Ellie Carpenter scoring twice.
But it was an astonishing rocket from distance out of nowhere by Maika Hamano in the dying minutes of this enthralling duel that left fans gasping for superlatives, if not for air.
Playing her former club for the first time since last season’s loan, Hamano unleashed a shot which seemed to rise and accelerate in an elegant arc before evading Spurs keeper Lize Kop and billowing the back of the net.
Distracted by sheer wonderment, Chelsea completely switched off at the restart, allowing Tottenham to claw back a goal within seconds.
But Carpenter nailed the score with a spin-and-shoot to make it 6-2 and leave the crowd of nearly 8,000 strolling back to Fulham Broadway with grins as wide as the Amazon.
The women visit Palace at the weekend before Rome come to SW6 for a tough Champions League game.
