Manchester United appointed Michael Carrick as interim manager in January 2026 following Ruben Amorim’s departure, a decision that initially appeared inspired.
The former midfielder revitalised a struggling side, guiding United to a third-place Premier League finish and restoring optimism around Old Trafford.
However, the excitement surrounding Carrick has evaporated just months later.
United have recorded only two victories in their opening 11 competitive matches this season, against Ipswich Town and Sabah FK.
Wednesday’s humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat against Como extended their winless run to seven matches, with Nico Paz scoring twice as Cesc Fabregas’ side exposed United’s defensive frailties.
Yesterday, reports emerged that United had begun identifying potential replacements for Carrick.
Eddie Howe, Antonio Conte and Julian Nagelsmann are among the names under consideration, while Unai Emery and Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler have also attracted interest.
Nevertheless, Carrick is expected to remain in charge against Bournemouth on Sunday, with the fixture potentially decisive for his future.
Against this backdrop of managerial uncertainty, Manchester United have confirmed another important development behind the scenes.
Lucy Houghton has confirmed her promotion to Senior Legal Counsel at Manchester United, announcing the appointment through her personal LinkedIn account.
The legal professional shared the development approximately two weeks ago, expressing her excitement about taking on the new responsibilities.
Houghton brings nine years of experience since completing her Legal Practice Course at BPP University in 2017, where she achieved a distinction.
She previously studied law at the University of Nottingham and Australian law at the University of Queensland.
Her promotion was welcomed by colleagues, including Charlie Shaw Leech, United’s Head of Legal for Operational Legal Services, who congratulated her publicly.
While the appointment is unrelated to the first-team managerial position, it represents another internal development as United continue making changes across the organisation.
