PHILADELPHIA -- Second-year Philadelphia 76ers guard VJ Edgecombe continues to be impressive in clutch moments. After knocking down so many big shots as a rookie, the No. 3 pick of the 2025 draft kept things going in the right direction recently as he knocked down a big 3 in the team's NBA Cup win over the New York Knicks and then another one in Saturday's win over the Charlotte Hornets.
Edgecombe wasn't having the best game against the Hornets. He shot only 4-for-13 overall on the night, but he stepped up and knocked down a huge 3-pointer off a step back to give the Sixers the breathing room they needed to handle the Hornets and get the job done. It was another example for Philadelphia weathering plenty of storms to finish off another comeback win.
"We uplift each other," said big man Jabari Walker. "We've known each other for some time now. Everybody knows each other, so we know what to say. I'm talking to VJ the whole game. He didn't really like how he was playing. I was like, ‘VJ, none of this matters. We need you right now. We've been looking to score. We know what you're capable of. Your job is to be a clutch-time scorer.’ He's like, ‘Yep, you're right.' And then went out and did that. I was telling him, I was like, see, that's exactly what it is."
Edgecombe has supreme confidence in himself and the Sixers will continue to put the ball in his hands in those clutch moments. Walker sees it. The Sixers see it. Everything just comes down to the work Edgecombe has put in and the ability to knock down those shots when the lights shine brightest.
"I mean, VJ's the guy he thinks he is," Walker laughed. "And VJ's the guy everybody knows he is. He's just confident. Nothing really riles him up and he's just even-keeled. I love how he's been adjusting to the team and cutting and taking more of a defensive role, just like I knew he would, but just so much respect for him and how he carries himself."
