Titans Mill: Cam Ward's Best NFL Game Takes Trade Deadline Pressure Off Tennessee

The Titans are far from answering all of their questions, but Cam Ward's best game as a pro makes the trade deadline a lot less crucial.

Going into Week 8, the November 10 trade deadline was beginning to look make-or-break for the Tennessee Titans. Little to nothing has been clicking on a consistent basis in Robert Saleh's first season, and little to nothing appeared off the table as far as the market goes.

Against the Cincinnati Bengals, the final result wasn't out of the ordinary. The Titans are 1-7 after yet another loss. However, Cam Ward having his best game as a professional throws all other worries to the wayside for a moment. Ward looked like a franchise QB.

All the sudden, who the Titans must move and the sort of capital they need to acquire in return feels slightly less important. Don't get us wrong, there are still trades Tennessee could very well make within the next eight days.

However, they're simply not as critical if Ward is playing at this level. Previously rising conversations about drafting a QB in 2027 have taken a backseat to one encouraging sentiment. That sentiment is the basis of today's Titans Mill.

If Cam Ward keeps playing like this, the Titans can keep building around him. That would mean the world to Saleh's tenure, as well as the franchise's rebuild.

Ward's breakout can be a massive relief for Titans

In yesterday's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, Ward threw for a career-high 304 yards, and rushed for a career-high 41. He passed 26/40 on the day, threw two touchdowns, and broke a five-game INT streak.

The Titans' 36 points was the most the team had scored in five years. Ward made a questionable decision or two down the line (taking a sack at the end of regulation), but he looked improved in every other facet. He looked every bit of the franchise guy Tennessee drafted him to be.

In the case that the Titans had to draft or sign another QB next season, the Jeffery Simmons trade appeared to only be scratching the surface of in-season moves. Executing the football equivalent of a heart transplant right before a coach's second season is no easy feat.

Ward responded at the perfect time

Every pick is a little more important, and you have to hope the next guy doesn't disappoint in the same way. Saleh and his staff scrambling to fast track this rebuild around a different signal caller isn't off the table, but Ward could not have responded at a better time.

Now, when it comes to making deadline moves, the Titans have a defining performance from Ward in their back pocket. The pressure is temporarily off to have all the pieces together and ready by next season for a new guy.

Again, this isn't to say that Tennessee won't move pieces, or that Ward is safe. But the QB's career game removed the pressure for a full-on fire sale by November 10. It bought general manager Mike Borgonzi and Coach Saleh a little more time to see what the group they've got right now has.

The Titans may be 1-7 heading into the bye, but their trajectory is brighter right now than it has been since Week 1. Another game like this from Ward, and offseason projections may shift entirely. His pull is that serious.
