Will Ospreay beat seven opponents in AEW's first-ever Clockwork Carnage match for the World Championship at WrestleDream.

Per the stipulation, the first stage of the match was contested like a gauntlet eliminator with staggered entrances.

Ospreay drew the first entrance to ensure he would have to battle all seven opponents to defend his title, followed by Konosuke Takeshita as the second entrant. The third entrant to the match was Ospreay's United Empire teammate, "Speedball" Mike Bailey, and the fourth entrant came in the form of Ricochet. Number five was the TNT Champion, Darby Allin, who immediately introduced a table to the affair.

International Champion Kazuchika Okada came out as number six. The seventh entrant, Adam Copeland, made his entrance moments after the first elimination came; Takeshita pinned Bailey to ensure he would not progress to the second stage.

Takeshita sought to make Copeland his second elimination before getting caught with a Rainmaker for Okada to be eliminated himself. And then Samoa Joe made his entrance at eighth to get the second stage of the bout started, where-in falls are scored for 15 minutes akin to an Iron Man match.

Adam Copeland nearly won the AEW World Championship

Joe scored the first fall after a Musclebuster to Allin, followed then by Ricochet clearing Joe from the ring so he could pin Allin. Okada got his first on the board with a Rainmaker and rare pin on Copeland. Ospreay got his first with a Styles Clash to Ricochet, only to then get a Coffin Drop from Allin to tie up the contest for all but Copeland.

Allin then took the lead with another pin on Copeland, before eating a Hidden Blade for Ospreay to tie it up with him. Copeland speared Ricochet through the table that had been set up earlier, but he could not score a fall on the outside.

Joe then equalized with Allin and Ospreay by submitting the latter in the Coquina Clutch. He then sought to put Ospreay away again with the Musclebuster but wound up speared out of it by Copeland, allowing him to get that elusive first fall.

Copeland then managed to equalize with a spear on Ricochet with just over a minute remaining. And he looked like he might steal the contest entirely after landing a spear on Okada. He made the cover with mere seconds to go but got caught with Ospreay's Hidden Blade to make the winning three-count.

After the match, Ospreay sought to celebrate with his title belt before Copeland extended his hand. Ospreay accepted and Copeland pulled him closer to indicate he would be coming back for the World title.

Copeland only announced on Wednesday that he would be calling it quits on his in-ring career next year.
