Liverpool injury update as Andoni Iraola prepares to unleash forgotten 22-year-old midfielder

Dominik Szoboszlai’s injury proved the biggest dampener on a Saturday afternoon when Liverpool picked up a vital and hard-fought three points away at Brentford.

Andoni Iraola’s side took plenty of heart from the 2-1 victory at the Gtech Community Stadium, but watching their talismanic No. 8 helped off by the medical team after just 32 minutes threatened long-lasting tactical ramifications for the weeks ahead.

Early medical assessments indicate Szoboszlai could be sidelined for over two weeks, ruling him out until the November international break. With six massive fixtures packed into this upcoming block, Iraola must now navigate a grueling schedule with a severely depleted engine room.

While 19-year-old prodigy Trey Nyoni is expected to absorb a large share of the workload, this unexpected crisis opens the door for James McConnell and perhaps even forgotten senior hand Wataru Endo to step into the spotlight.

James McConnell Deserves His Premier League Chance

Having been tipped to start against Brentford prior to Szoboszlai’s fitness race and Ryan Gravenberch’s one-match suspension, Trey Nyoni instead stepped off the bench to play a full hour at the Gtech. It was his longest Premier League outing to date, and the teenager handled the physical combat with composure far beyond his years.

While Gravenberch returns for Tuesday’s crucial Champions League clash with Villarreal, Szoboszlai’s absence leaves the heavy lifting almost entirely on the Dutchman, Nyoni, and Alexis Mac Allister.

With six matches in quick succession and only three main central midfielders available, James McConnell is primed to receive a meaningful run of minutes.

The 22-year-old midfielder was superb in his solitary appearance this term a mature display in the Carabao Cup against Tottenham Hotspur and has been desperate to reignite his Anfield career after seeing his developmental progress stall over the last 18 months. Iraola has repeatedly shown that age is no barrier when he needs players to execute his vision. McConnell looks set to be the next academy graduate to benefit from that trust.

Wataru Endo: The Forgotten Man Ready to Fill the Void

Beyond McConnell, Iraola possesses another senior, battle-hardened option in Wataru Endo.

The 33-year-old Japanese international has yet to feature in any of Liverpool’s 10 matches across all competitions this season. While he currently sits behind McConnell in Iraola’s pecking order, his experience could prove invaluable over the coming fortnight.

Though Endo has seen minimal action over the past year, his last performance in Red a gritty, reliable display during February’s 1-0 away victory over Sunderland proved he retains the tactical discipline required at the elite level.

While that outing came at right-back, stepping into a double pivot is second nature for him. Endo brings a combative, ball-winning defensive profile that Iraola’s engine room has sometimes lacked, making his potential return to the fold a welcome tactical alternative.

What It Means for Kopites and Liverpool’s Season

Losing a player of Szoboszlai’s dynamism, pressing intensity, and technical quality is an unquestionable blow during a congested fixture run. However, in football, one star’s setback is another’s golden ticket.

For McConnell and Endo, this three-week window is a career-defining crossroads. If both can seize their opportunities and lighten the load on Mac Allister and Gravenberch, they will not only keep Liverpool’s momentum rolling across Europe and the domestic front they will prove that Iraola’s squad possesses the tactical depth to compete on all fronts.
