The January transfer window is looming with pressure on Manchester United to recruit smartly and help manager Michael Carrick.
United did recruit during the summer transfer window, but that business was centred around the midfield.
That has left the left-back position exposed, with Luke Shaw the only recognized senior left-back in the entire squad whilst Noussair Mazraoui has been relied upon to cover at times.
It has created a unique weakness in Carrick’s side, one that the club are reportedly keen to address in the coming transfer windows.
United now appear to be taking the right steps in doing just that with Sport Witness reporting that the club are interested in a move for AS Roma left-back Wesley.
Arsenal and Newcastle United have also been credited with an interest by the publication.
The 23-year-old has played six Serie A games so far this season, becoming a consistent part of Roma’s efforts.
His regularity has also translated across to Champions League matches with him playing in both of the side’s fixtures in the tournament thus far.
After breaking into professional football with Flamengo, the Brazilian made the switch to Roma ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Prior to that switch, however, the left-back did attract interest from Manchester United although the club decided against a move.
With the Red Devils now back in the race for Wesley, it is clear to see the club’s intentions in the market.
If they are to secure the signing of the left-back, however, they will have to beat Arsenal and Newcastle at a minimum and could have to fend off interest from other clubs as well.
It creates an interesting question: how far are Manchester United willing to go to sign a player?
The club previously pulled out of races for Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali, and Elliot Anderson during the summer transfer window as they all went onto join United’s Premier League rivals.
How Manchester United approach this race could be a major indicator of how far the club are willing to go in their pursuit of players.
