Elton John once sang that ‘Saturday night is the night for fighting’, but just as we saw in the game between the Carolina Hurricanes and Boston Bruins, it seems that Tuesday night is just as good a night as any to ‘get a little action in’.
The game started off quickly with a power play goal from Pavel Zacha just a little over a minute and a half into the first period, leaving the Hurricanes behind the game early.
Well, Nicolas Deslauriers was just the man the Hurricanes needed to spark some energy into them. Towards the end of the frame, he dropped his gloves and got in stance as the Bruins’ own seasoned fighter, Tanner Jeannot, did the same. For Deslauriers, it was the 98th brawl in his NHL career, and for Jeannot, it was his 53rd. The tangle lasted for nearly a full minute before its conclusion.
In the final minute of the first period, Jackson Blake got the game-tying goal, fueled up by the spark from Deslauriers’ duel.
The second period didn’t have any goals to discuss, but it did have an…anti-goal(?)…worth mentioning – this slick little play from Jesperi Kotkaniemi on what would have been a sure goal.
Midway through the third period, however, the top-line combined in a charge to the Bruins’ zone, with Sebastian Aho sending a backhand shot past Jeremy Swayman for the game-winning goal – and the final goal of the game.
During the Storm Surge after their 2-1 win, it was Aho who was pushed into the hug circle, with his helmet being raised up on a stick.
Prior to Tuesday morning’s practice, it was anticipated that Mark Jankowski would skate with the team – but his return to play was uncertain. Interestingly, he played against the Bruins. However, while Taylor Hall was activated from injured reserve and expected to play, he left practice early and has since been listed as day-to-day.
With his eighth win in row to start the season, Pyotr Kochetkov has tied Frederik Andersen for the longest season-opening winning streak in franchise history. Furthermore, Kochetkov and Andersen are the only two active goalies in the NHL to have accomplished the feat.
