Sean McVay’s season went from bad to worse when the Los Angeles Rams lost their second consecutive game, an 18-16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Despite being heavy favorites for the Week 6 clash against the Cardinals, the Rams’ offense stalled in the second half, allowing Arizona to notch just its second win of the season.
After the Cardinals’ upset win over the Rams, Bill Simmons slammed McVay’s playcalling during the contest.
During Monday’s segment of “The Ringer” podcast, Simmons was highly critical of McVay’s decision-making during key moments of the clash against the Cardinals.
“Sean McVay, just go to Amazon already,” Simmons said. “Just do it now. I thought just two weeks in a row of atrocious coaching from him. I actually thought the Cardinals outplayed them and deserved to win the game, and if anything, it shouldn’t even have been close in the last couple of minutes. The Cardinals did everything they needed to do, they slowed the game down, they were able to move the ball. They made every field goal.”
McVay’s offense managed only 16 points against an Arizona defense ranked No. 32 in scoring defense. 29 in EPA per play before the Week 6 game. Simmons further blasted the Rams’ inability to hold on to a late lead against an inconsistent Arizona team as the clock wound down at home.
“But it still came down to terrible playcalling,” Simmons said. “They gave them field position after they scored the touchdown; they gave Arizona the ball in the 35 because their special teams are so bad. He doesn’t care about that. So Arizona, one pass over the middle. Penalty. All of a sudden, they’re in field goal range. But the biggest thing, I thought they scored too soon and I don’t understand how teams are still getting this wrong.
“You just want to run like three, four more plays. You never want them to get the ball back. They call the quick out to Parkinson, who then this (expletive) reaches the ball over the goal line to score, 47 seconds left. We know how bad their special teams are; this is a gift. They’re gonna need two passes; the Cardinals are gonna win the game.”
The Rams entered the season as the favorites to win the Super Bowl because of their stacked roster, including reigning MVP Matthew Stafford under center and 2025 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett, acquired from the Cleveland Browns.
Instead, they have flopped at every turn and missed a chance for a statement win when a blocked game-winning field goal cost them a victory against the Buffalo Bills. McVay’s team is about to embark on the NFL’s most favorable schedule in the next five weeks, but that stretch began with a flat performance against the Cardinals.
McVay’s teams have also notoriously been slow starters since they won the Super Bowl five seasons ago. The Rams have only had a winning record after six games once in five years, going 3-3, 3-3, 2-4, 4-2, and now 2-4 again. In McVay’s first five seasons at the helm, the Rams started 22-8.
The Rams have been average on both sides of the ball this season, earning a PFN Offense Impact score of 75.0 (No. 14 in the NFL) and a PFN Defense Impact score of 76.2 (No. 14 in the league).
