Just days before their NBA season opener, the Golden State Warriors received an injury scare involving their superstar guard Stephen Curry.
The Warriors were hosting an open practice in front of a large crowd yesterday. Curry appeared to be preparing an offensive move as a teammate approached on defense. A whistle blew soon after, as it was clear something was off with Curry.
He limped over to the sidelines, causing immediate concern from those watching. Following practice, head coach Steve Kerr shared what seemed to be an optimistic update regarding Curry.
"He said he's fine," Kerr said at the time, confirming it was an ankle injury and not his knee.
A further update arrived from the Warriors, confirming the ankle injury, leaving his availability for the team's season opener a game-time decision, per ESPN.
The Warriors have their season opener on the road against Luka Doncic and the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday, Oct. 21. They'll have their home opener two nights later when they host the Memphis Grizzlies.
The good news so far is that this appears to be a sprained right ankle, per Dalton Johnson. The extent of the injury and whether it affects Curry's availability for the season opener remain unclear.
Injuries plagued Golden State last season, including Curry, who missed an extended period of time with a knee injury.
In addition to Curry missing time, the Warriors also saw two of their key players experience season-ending injuries. Jimmy Butler tore his right ACL back in January and is looking towards a return in January or February.
Moses Moody suffered a ruptured left patellar tendon in March, and the team could have him back in December or January of the NBA season, per ESPN's Anthony Slater.
Golden State will hope to have enough healthy players available to remain competitive in a loaded Western Conference, which seems to have gotten even better this offseason. On the bright side, the Warriors added promising talent Yaxel Lendeborg in the first round of June's NBA Draft, who seems to be emerging quickly as a good fit for the team.
