Virat Kohli added another landmark to his remarkable One-Day International career on Wednesday, November 4, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar to become the highest run-scorer in ODI run chases. The India batter achieved the milestone with a commanding 74 off 51 balls against New Zealand in the first ODI at Eden Park, Auckland.
Kohli’s innings took his career tally in ODI chases to 8,741 runs, moving him past Tendulkar’s previous record of 8,720. The former India captain reached the landmark during a rain-affected match, helping the visitors secure a five-wicket victory under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.
Kohli’s latest achievement further strengthens his reputation as one of the most dependable batters in limited-overs cricket when India are chasing a target.
He has scored 8,741 runs in 169 innings while batting second in ODIs, averaging 66.21. His tally includes 30 centuries and 46 half-centuries, highlighting his consistency across different match situations. Tendulkar finished his ODI career with 8,720 runs in 242 innings while chasing, including 17 centuries and 52 fifties.

Gurnoor Brar claimed three scalps and Anshul Kamboj took two. Rain interruptions reduced India’s chase to 32 overs, with the revised target set at 143. Kohli’s 74, alongside Shubman Gill’s 37, helped India reach 143 for five in 22.4 overs.
Kohli also equalled Ricky Ponting’s record for the most ODI runs against New Zealand. Both batters have scored 1,971 runs against the Black Caps, although Kohli reached the figure in fewer innings.
The Indian star also became the first batter to cross 13,000 ODI runs while batting at No. 3. He has scored 13,062 runs in 251 innings at the position, averaging 61.61. With another record secured, Kohli’s latest performance underlined his enduring impact in ODI cricket, and his remarkable ability to deliver when India are chasing.
