Aston Villa secured three points in their Premier League fixture with Manchester City, as they won 2-1.
A brace from Nicolas Jackson was enough to secure the victory as Man City’s perfect start to their league campaign came to an end.
There was a notable absence from the Aston Villa squad, as their summer loan signing, Alejandro Garnacho, was not involved, and now the club could be set to take drastic action against the Argentina international.
Unai Emery has only used Garnacho on five occasions this season, three of these coming in the Premier League and the other two in the Champions League.
However, across these five appearances, not one has been from the start, with the attacker only playing a total of 60 minutes across the campaign.
The Basque manager does not seem too impressed by Garnacho since the winger joined the club, as seen by the lack of minutes.
Now, the club are willing to take drastic action moving forward with the Argentina international, with it being reported by Football Insider that they will deliberately restrict the 22-year-old's playing time unless his performances drastically improve.
The idea of ending the loan has also been suggested; however, deliberately not playing the player to avoid triggering a mandatory purchase agreement in his contract may be Villa’s ultimate decision.
The 22-year-old’s deal contains a conditional £43 million obligation to buy tied to a specific number of appearances.
It would be a similar move to one they pulled last season with Liverpool and Harvey Elliott, who would also have required Villa to pay an obligatory amount of money had he played in an agreed number of matches.
The 22-year-old has struggled since breaking onto the scene with Manchester United in the 2022-23 campaign.
A lot was expected by Manchester United fans after an initially bright start in their famous red jersey; however, these performances quickly declined in quality.
Ruben Amorim would infamously send him to the ‘bomb squad’ in the summer of 2025 as he was deemed surplus to requirements.
Chelsea offered Garnacho a chance to remain at a top club in England, as they identified that there was a talented footballer there and believed they could extract the desired performances from him.
This would not come to fruition, and after just one season with Chelsea, they were happy to send him on loan to Villa this summer, as the Blues acquired Morgan Rogers.
Villa’s decision could prove to be a decisive one for Garnacho’s career, as unless he discovers some form and recovers his form under Emery, it could signal the end of his career for clubs at the top of English football.
