Former Manchester United striker scores 4 goals in club-record victory

Club-record victories don’t come around too often.

Manchester United’s record has stood for 70 years, dating back to a 10-0 victory over Anderlecht in the European Cup in 1956.

The closest the Red Devils have come to beating that in recent times was a 9-0 win against nine-man Southampton in 2021, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United romped to victory in the Premier League.

Goals from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, a Jan Bednarek own goal, Edinson Cavani, an Anthony Martial brace, Scott McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Dan James equalled Premier League history, as the Red Devils repeated their own 9-0 win over Ipswich from 1995.

This was just under two years before Wout Weghorst joined Manchester United.

The Dutchman joined on loan in January 2023 upon head coach Erik ten Hag’s request, as they looked to build towards a strong end to the season.

Weghorst scored twice in 31 Red Devils appearances, at a time where he was used as a utility player to help build attacks, rather than as a prolific goalscorer.

After returning to parent club Burnley, Weghorst signed for Ajax, before making his latest switch to FC Twente in the summer, where Erik ten Hag now works as a technical director.

Twente have now recorded their own piece of history with a 9-0 win of their own over Excelsior Rotterdam. It’s the club’s biggest ever win in its competitive history.

Wout Weghorst scored a huge four goals in the game, admitting to the club’s website post-match that “I haven’t scored such goals often.”

The victory will come as a huge boost to both Weghorst and technical director ten Hag, who has been questioned for his hands-on approach, attending training sessions, despite being in a board role at the Eredivisie side.

Wout Weghorst has now played his part in a piece of history – that Twente’s travelling supporters will never forget.
