Arsenal are in the race to sign Serie A forward

Arsenal are among the clubs keeping a close watch on Monza forward Gustavo Varela after his explosive start in Serie A, with Calciomercato crediting fresh reporting around a race that is beginning to gather pace.

The Portuguese striker, born in 2005 and developed previously at Benfica, has emerged as one of the most eye-catching young attackers in Italy. A return of seven goals in eight league matches has pushed him to the top of the Serie A scoring charts and, more importantly, placed him firmly on the radar of leading recruitment teams across Europe.

Arsenal interest grows in Gustavo Varela

There is a growing sense that Premier League attention is becoming a major factor in this situation, with Arsenal mentioned prominently among the clubs from England tracking Varela’s progress. That is no surprise. His recent form for Monza has combined output with presence, and the profile, young, productive and with resale value, fits the type of opportunity elite clubs regularly assess.

Any move, however, looks far from straightforward. Napoli are reported to be considering a January approach as sporting director Giovanni Manna works on the best formula to test Monza’s resolve. The Serie A side know they have a player whose value is rising rapidly, and there is little incentive to make negotiations easy.

Napoli transfer plan faces competition

Napoli’s interest appears serious, but the competition is broadening. Arsenal’s presence in the background adds weight from the Premier League, where clubs can often move aggressively if they decide the timing is right. That said, the deal structure around the player may prove decisive.

Benfica clause could shape Monza future

Benfica remain an important part of the picture. The Portuguese club reportedly retained the right to match future offers when Varela joined Monza, along with a 20 per cent share of any future capital gain. Those terms give Benfica influence and could complicate any attempt by Arsenal, Napoli or others to take control of the process quickly.

For now, Varela’s future remains open, but his name is clearly one to watch as the market develops.

Our View

This feels exactly like the sort of situation Arsenal should be alive to. A young striker producing at that level in Serie A commands attention, and if the scouting department has been tracking him for a while, there is every reason to stay close to it. Seven goals in eight matches is not a number anyone can brush aside, especially at that age.

The obvious question is whether this is one for now or one for later. Arsenal already need certainty in the final third, so any move for a 21-year-old would have to come with a clear plan. If he is viewed as a developmental option, there must be patience. If he is seen as someone ready to contribute quickly, the club would need real conviction in his level.

The Benfica angle makes it more complicated, and that usually pushes prices up or at least removes flexibility. That alone may force Arsenal to think carefully about timing. Still, when a forward has momentum, confidence and visible demand from clubs like Napoli, waiting too long can be costly.

There is enough here to be intrigued. The profile sounds exciting, the production is strong and the market pressure suggests Arsenal are not alone in rating him highly. Whether it becomes something concrete is another matter, but this is a story worth following closely.
