Duhan van der Merwe is reportedly set to leave Edinburgh when his contract expires next year, with a move to Japan or France on the cards.

The Scotland winger is approaching the latter stages of his career and could be ready for a fresh challenge overseas, where he may be able to secure a more lucrative deal.

According to Mail Sport, sources close to Edinburgh believe the 31-year-old is likely to head abroad, although no potential clubs have been named.

With what could be the final major contract of his career approaching, a move overseas would offer Van der Merwe the chance to maximise his earnings while experiencing life in a new country.

Given his pedigree and performances at club and international level, the winger is unlikely to be short of suitors, with several clubs potentially competing for his signature.

Van der Merwe began his rugby journey in South Africa, impressing at schoolboy level with SWD before representing South Africa Schools in 2012 and 2013.

He joined the Blue Bulls academy in 2014 and went on to represent South Africa at the Under-20 World Championship, where they finished runners-up.

After making his senior debut for the Blue Bulls in 2016, Van der Merwe moved to French side Montpellier.

However, recurring hip problems restricted his opportunities, prompting a switch to Edinburgh ahead of the 2017/18 season.

He quickly established himself as one of the Scottish club's standout performers before joining Worcester Warriors in 2021.

Following Worcester's collapse in 2022, he returned to Edinburgh and has remained a key figure ever since.

Van der Merwe qualified for Scotland on residency grounds and made his international debut in October 2020.

He became Scotland's all-time leading try scorer in 2024 and has also featured for the British and Irish Lions on their tours of South Africa in 2021 and Australia in 2025.

A move abroad would not necessarily bring his Scotland career to an end.

Scotland have several players based outside the country, meaning Van der Merwe could continue representing his adopted nation while playing overseas.

His place in Scottish rugby history is already secure. With seven tries against England in Calcutta Cup matches, he has become one of Scotland's most recognisable and popular players.

However, the winger is currently dealing with a foot injury that has prevented him from featuring for Edinburgh this season.

His last competitive appearance came in Scotland's summer victory over Fiji during the final round of the Nations Championship fixtures.
