In many ways ,both clubs are similar-small rural units with a mighty tradition and immense pride in the jersey and both have loads of county championship medals.
And McNulty, who recalls beating Devenish in the Ulster club championship in 1993, noticed this deep pride in the blue jersey when he took over late last year.
"I met with club chairman Gerard O'Brien and we had a chat and a different county has always appealed to me so I ended up taking the job and it has been as most memorable experience.
"But the big thing I have noticed about these lads is their massive commitment right from the start.
"They are pretty young and very keen to learn which makes our job easier.
"Having those numbers and commitment at training goes a long way to what you want to do on the field."
And they have great pride from the mighty teams of the 1960s and 1980s and early 90s and are not dissimilar to Kilcar.
"Yes there are similarities and club chairman Gerard O'Brien was on that team.
"But you can sense and see that tradition when you talk to them and they want to get themselves back into senior football and step by step the championship has gone well this year.
"We have got to the final but nothing has been won yet.
And McNulty is well aware of the huge challenge Kinawley will bring and Devenish are being touted as favourites in the Kinawley camp.
"Yeah, that would suit them, but a favourites tag has always been irrelevant to me.
"You just have to perform on the day and if you don't perform on the day, you are never going to win anything so a favourites tag is fine for everybody else.
"But for us, it is to just perform on the day and the favourites tag just does not interest me at all."
On getting some high scores especially in the semi-final against Tempo, he said:
"We have been playing well so far in the championship and there is a broad range of scores throughout the team which is good to see.
"We need that to continue in the final."
On Kinawley, he said they "were unfortunate to come down to Intermediate football and we know they have a good team and a good crop of young players and they will be anxious to get back into senior football and they will present a tough test."
And they have Ruairi Corrigan to bounce from the bench as he did against Derrylin to great effect in the semi-final.
"He is a very jinking player and a low centre of gravity and is very accurate and he kicked three points the last day at crucial times."
But Devenish have a lot of potential two pointers in Cian O'Brien, Jason Love, Barry Mulrone and Conall Maguire.
"Yes, you would hope they carry that good form into the final where it matters most."
