Cambridge City showed no mercy during Saturday’s 7-0 win over Little Oakley in the Isthmian League North Division.
The Lilywhites scored twice inside the opening four minutes at the FWD-IP Community Stadium, and they eventually headed into the break four goals to the good.
And they continued to put their visitors to the sword in the second half, with three more goals capping an afternoon to remember for Mickey Spillane’s side.
The City boss said: “It was superb from minute one to minute 90.
“We’ve had a habit of starting bright, and that helps. To get the two goals (after four minutes), you can go back and rest on your laurels, but we didn’t. We put our foot to the throat and held it there.
“The front three got the first three goals, and we continued from there. Even the substitutes that came on, they had a real impact, so I’m absolutely delighted.”
It was Alex Warman who got the ball rolling for City in the second minute before Hockey netted the first of what would become a hat-trick.
Striker Charlie Royle and Fletcher Toll got their names on the scoresheet prior to the half-time whistle, while Hockey took centre stage after the break as he bagged two more goals.
The scoring was completed from the penalty spot in the 85th minute by Samrai Gebrai, who recently rejoined the club.
On the return of Gebrai, Spillane added: “It was fitting for him to come on and get the goal.
“Like I said when we signed him this week, I’ve been here a year, and we haven’t seen the best of him.
“We all know what he can do, it’s just about getting him on the pitch so he can do it. Hopefully he can build his fitness up and get back to doing what he does.”
Sixth-placed City, who have multiple games in hand on the teams around them, will have home advantage over Buckhurst Hill on Tuesday (20 October) night.
