Rangers midfielder Connor Barron left Ibrox for Middlesbrough hoping to revive his career with regular football. Instead, the Scottish international has encountered an even worse situation than the one he left behind. The Connor Barron loan nightmare has become a remarkable example of a move going spectacularly wrong.

Barron struggled to establish himself under Derek McInnes at Rangers. However, the midfielder still offered energy, determination and an admirable work ethic. Consequently, a Championship loan appeared sensible for everyone involved.

Unfortunately, reality has proved rather different.

Middlesbrough Cannot Find Room for Barron

Barron has endured a miserable spell at Middlesbrough. Indeed, the English club have barely given him a look in.

The midfielder has watched from the sidelines while his temporary employers continue their Championship campaign. Furthermore, his appearances on the bench have brought little encouragement.

This makes the situation particularly embarrassing for Rangers. After all, Middlesbrough operate considerably below the Ibrox giants in footballing stature, history and prestige.

Yet somehow, a player who struggled for minutes at Rangers cannot even get onto the pitch for Middlesbrough.

The Connor Barron loan nightmare therefore raises serious questions about the thinking behind this arrangement.

Public Discussion Changes Absolutely Nothing

The situation has already attracted considerable attention in the press. Moreover, former Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson has publicly questioned the wisdom of allowing Barron to continue wasting his season.

Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg has praised the player’s attitude and performances in training. Nevertheless, those compliments have brought absolutely nothing in terms of competitive football.

Meanwhile, Rangers know perfectly well about their midfielder’s predicament. Yet neither club has delivered a practical solution.

Barron even scored against Newcastle United in a friendly during October. However, that achievement apparently did little to improve his prospects.

Consequently, all the public discussion, praise and concern have achieved precisely nothing.

Rangers Must Address This Terrible Loan

The most frustrating aspect concerns Barron’s actual qualities. Nobody ever accused the midfielder of lacking commitment, effort or determination.

Indeed, he remains a valuable player with considerable potential. He simply needs consistent football to develop his abilities.

Instead, Rangers have watched a fringe player become virtually irrelevant at a club considerably smaller than themselves.

That represents an extraordinary decline in circumstances rather than any meaningful career progression.

Furthermore, Middlesbrough’s reluctance to use him makes the entire arrangement increasingly pointless.

January offers Rangers an opportunity to reconsider the deal. However, the club must first establish whether a recall represents a realistic option.

Ultimately, the Connor Barron loan nightmare has delivered nothing remotely positive for his development.

Rangers sent a hardworking midfielder south to play football. Instead, Middlesbrough have effectively turned him into a spectator.

Quite simply, this has been a terrible loan thus far.
