Top trio of Brits reach last eight of Lexus Wrexham Open

Dudeney was quickly followed into the last eight of the World Tennis Tour W100 event at Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre by Hannah Klugman, another current British top 10 player, with Jodie Burrage then making it a hat-trick of British winners on a successful day.

Dudeney, 23, who will next face French player Elsa Jacquemot, got the better of seventh seed Susan Bandecchi from Switzerland 6-3 6-7 6-4 in a match lasting two hours and 51 minutes.

Dudeney, the winner of a W35 tournament in Birmingham last week and currently ranked 232, was delighted to progress against Bandecchi, the current world number 139.

"That was a very long match," she said. "It was really nice to get through that one. I think I played really well today, it was a great match. Susan is a very tricky opponent, she fights unbelievably hard, so it was really nice to get over the finish line."

She is now preparing to face Jacqemot, who was a 7-6 7-6 winner against Slovakia's Viktoria Morvayova, in tomorrow's quarter-finals.

Dudeney added: "I haven't played her before, so I don't know too much about her, but hopefully I can go out and play how I've been playing again and it will be another good match."

She was followed into the Carden Park Arena by Klugman, with the 17-year-old producing another excellent performance to beat higher ranked Czech player Anna Siskova, currently the world number 172.

Siskova had knocked out second seed Alina Charaeva in the first round, but this was to be Klugman's day as she completed a 6-2 6-4 win.

Klugman, who reached the French Open junior girls' final last year and is currently ranked 341, will play sixth seed Rebecca Sramkova from Slovakia, who beat Italian Noemi Basiletti 6-0 7-5, in the last eight tomorrow.

Burrage ensured further British representation in the last eight after impressively beating fourth seed Noma Noha Akugue, the world number 127 from Germany, 6-1 7-6.

Burrage will next play Marina Bassols Ribera, the fifth seed, following the Spanish star's 6-1 0-6 6-2 victory over Australian Lizette Cabrera.

"It was a really tough match," said Bassols Ribera, the world number 130. "I think I played so good the first set. The second one I started a little bit down in the score and then I think she played more aggressive and it was a super quick second set.

"Then I focused on my game again in the third one, so I'm so happy to win this match."

As for advancing to the last eight, she added: "I can't wait to play tomorrow. I'll now rest a little bit and then prepare for the match. I'm so excited to play tomorrow again."

This is the first time Bassols Ribera has visited Wrexham and she is enjoying this week's tournament.

"Yes, really good," she smiled. "It's a little bit cold for me, but I enjoy going to tournaments and this one is so nice. The organisation is so good, so I hope that I can continue winning. Let's see."

Tomorrow's quarter-final matches at Wrexham Tennis & Padel Centre start at 10.30am, with admission, which includes a 44-page tournament programme, £25 for adults and £19 for under-16s.
