Primoz Roglic facing career-defining days as retirement deadline looms for five-time Grand Tour winner
Primoz Roglic

Primoz Roglic is entering a potentially decisive few days in his professional cycling career, with a deadline outlined by his own agent now approaching and the five-time Grand Tour winner still undecided over whether to race again in 2027.

The 36-year-old Slovenian has yet to announce his plans following his departure from Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe, with retirement remaining a genuine possibility despite finishing second at the 2026 Vuelta a Espana and winning the European time trial title earlier this month.

On 12 October, Roglic's long-time agent Mattia Galli revealed that several offers remained available, but warned that the Slovenian had "a week or two at most" to make his decision.

"A transfer requires a lot of preparation, including new equipment, and we should start working on that before November," Galli told Tuttobiciweb, adding that Roglic needed time to recover from the season before committing to his next move.

Eight days later, no announcement has followed. Slovenian outlet Siol reported on Tuesday that Roglic's future remains unresolved, with the approaching start of November leaving increasingly little time for a new team to incorporate him into its preparations for 2027.

Roglic weighing up retirement despite desire to keep winning

Speaking at his Golden Circle charity event in Maribor earlier this month, Roglic admitted that the decision was proving considerably harder than finding somewhere to ride.

"Ultimately, I have to make the decision myself. Signing isn't the problem. You ask yourself what's harder: signing or drawing a line under it all," the four-time Vuelta winner explained.

His ambitions on the bike have not disappeared. Asked what continued to motivate him, Roglic was unequivocal: "The main motivation is simple: winning races."

Lotto-Intermarche, Tudor Pro Cycling and Pinarello-Q36.5 have all been linked with the former Olympic champion, although no agreement has been announced. Tudor has also reportedly withdrawn from discussions, while Galli previously insisted that teams with available places would be prepared to wait for a rider of Roglic's calibre.

Despite suffering a training accident shortly before the Vuelta, Roglic recovered to finish runner-up to Enric Mas before adding the European time trial championship on home roads in Slovenia. It was an impressive late-season return after a less convincing first half of 2026.

Retirement would bring an extraordinary career to a close after four Vuelta triumphs, the 2023 Giro d'Italia and Olympic time trial gold. Yet the possibility of continuing to fight for major victories remains open, provided Roglic decides another season is what he wants.

The Slovenian turns 37 on 29 October, just days after the decision window outlined by Galli reaches its conclusion. His 2026 campaign ended at Il Lombardia on 10 October, and with no race programme or new team confirmed for next year, that appearance could yet prove to have been the final one of his professional career.
