Lando Norris won a fantastic Brazilian Grand Prix on Sunday in Sao Paulo, the McLaren driver one of the few on track who had a relatively uneventful day.

Last year's champion was followed home by Max Verstappen, who carved through the field brilliantly from 21st on the grid (effectively 20th when Valtteri Bottas failed to start the race), and the sister Red Bull of Isack Hadjar in third.

The race started and finished in the rain, bookending a near 50-lap period of slick tyre running which was kicked off by Lewis Hamilton diving into the pits for softs on Lap 15. Unusually for a rain-affected Brazilian Grand Prix though, no drivers crashed out of the race and the safety car was never called upon, ensuring 71 straight laps of thrilling racing.

A wet qualifying session and a number of penalties had produced a muddled up starting grid which saw a Red Bull, two Ferraris and a McLaren starting in the back half of the field, all of them eventually scoring points (albeit some more than others).

Comebacks the story of the day in Sao Paulo

Verstappen was clearly the king of the overtakers, with both he and Hamilton making up more than ten places in the first two laps. The Ferrari man's progress stalled there though, while the Dutchman carried on his march to become Norris' main challenger for the race win when the rain arrived late on.

As expected before the race, Mercedes wrapped up the constructors' championship with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli finishing fourth and fifth respectively, despite both drivers spinning within a few laps of each other mid-race – Russell, embarrassingly, on pit exit.

Antonelli looked like a potential race-winner in the early stages, beating Norris off the line and holding that lead until the first round of pitstops. At that point, however, he failed to get his tyres up to temperature and spun to lose the lead at Turn 1 – sliding backward through the field and behind a number of his rivals as he complained about his car on the radio.

The Ferraris were perhaps the biggest disappointment of the day, with Leclerc simply failing to make any early progress from 14th on the grid and Hamilton going backward after an early charge into the top ten. Both did eventually snatch a small handful of points for seventh and ninth place finishes, but it was far from enough to prevent Mercedes sealing the constructors' title.
