The Buffalo Bills have lost a second player due to a suspension for spitting in the win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
On Sunday, the Bills clinched a tight 33-30 win over the Raiders at Allegiant Stadium. The physical contest proved a roller coaster, with Josh Allen throwing for 255 yards and two touchdowns to lead his team to victory despite Las Vegas attempts to rally back before the home crowd.
Kirk Cousins kept the Raiders competitive, but late-game defensive lapses and special-teams penalties hindered their comeback. The thrilling contest has been somewhat overshadowed, though, as two instances of spitting have led to suspensions.
In the second quarter, Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson exchanged several words with tight end Brock Bowers before spitting in his direction, all while an official stood just feet away. The 28-year-old was swiftly tossed from the contest for unsportsmanlike conduct, with the NFL announcing on Monday that he will be suspended without pay for one game.
Later in the game, with just 1:32 remaining in the fourth quarter, Sam Franklin Jr. allegedly spat at offensive tackle DJ Glaze following the Raiders’ successful extra point attempt. As a result, the defensive back - like Gardner-Johnson - violated Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1 of the league’s rulebook, which applies to “any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.”
Franklin has been suspended for one game, which means he will miss the Bills’ clash with the Baltimore Ravens in Week 8.
Under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Franklin possesses the right to appeal the suspension. According to WGR550, Franklin denies the incident ever happened and intends to appeal.
Any appeal will be heard and decided by an officer jointly appointed by the NFL and NFLPA.
Neither Franklin nor Glaze were penalized during the play. Franklin shoved the tackle after kicker Matt Gay converted the extra point, and Glaze grabbed him back by the collar before both men split and walked their separate ways.
If it is upheld, the Bills have a spitting problem which will infuriate head coach Joe Brady. When asked about Gardner-Johnson’s actions, Brady told reporters: “It can't happen. That's not what we're about. That's not what the game of football's about. And he knows that. And I'm understanding of why he was kicked out of the game.”
Following his ejection, Gardner-Johnson admitted that his actions were completely unwarranted. He said: “We were just arguing and talking. It was nothing negative. He ain't do nothing to me. It was just in the heat of the game arguing and talking s---. That gesture isn't warranted.”
After their bye week in Week 7, the 5-1 Bills return to action when they host the Ravens at Highmark Stadium on Sunday, Nov. 1.
