Manchester United’s Director of Football Jason Wilcox is understood to be a fan of a Rangers flop after a recent revelation.

Wilcox’s popularity has waned at Old Trafford in recent months, with many fans wanting him to be sacked before Michael Carrick.

Having joined from Manchester City in 2024, he has made a number of decisions that have not proven to be the right ones.

Scottish football chiefs are considering bringing an end to the Saturday 3pm blackout. What are your thoughts on that? Will it help or hinder things?

Jason Wilcox recommended former Rangers manager Russell Martin at Manchester United

Wilcox spoke highly of former Rangers boss Russell Martin when he was recommending potential replacements for Erik ten Hag, according to The Athletic. Wilcox worked with Martin at Southampton, and while he knew that he may not be ready for the United job, his name was still brought up in conversations.

This happened ahead of the FA Cup final in 2024, which ten Hag managed to win and earned him a stay at Old Trafford for a few months before being sacked the next season. Ruben Amorim then replaced the Dutchman, and at the time, Martin’s name was not likely to have been considered.

It will come as a major surprise to Rangers fans, as the Manchester outfit have the money to bring the best managers in the game to the club. The fact that someone like the former Gers boss was even considered is laughable, to say the least.

How did Martin do at Ibrox?

Martin is undoubtedly one of the worst managers in Rangers’ history, and his time at Ibrox was rightly short-lived. Even before he joined, fans were unsure about his abilities, and he did little to silence his critics.

In his 17 games in charge of the 55-time champions, he managed to win just five games, losing six and drawing as many. With a 1.24 points-per-game return, it was evident that his future at Ibrox was untenable.

Patrick Stewart, who pushed for Martin’s appointment, was also shown the door not too long after, and Danny Rohl did a good job coming in. Now, Derek McInnes is proving that he’s the right man to take the club forward, potentially towards their next league title.
