Liverpool legend Andy Robertson says he avoided a "bitter taste" by winning a second Premier League title during his time at Anfield, though he wanted to share that moment with some ex-Reds players who had already left by that point.
Robertson was a part of the side that won the title under Arne Slot a year before he was fired. He also won the league under Jurgen Klopp but that was during the period that Liverpool was unable to properly celebrate.
"The second Premier League, I thought about the lads that we had won it with before," Robertson told Sky Sports.
"I wish my closest friends — James Milner, Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Adam Lallana — were all sat next to me experiencing this.
"We deserved to experience what we experienced that day. If we had never got that and we just won the Premier League in the Covid season then there might have been a bitter taste for a lot of us.
"But I'm so glad that the lads who are still there like me, Mo (Salah), Virgil (van Dijk), Trent (Alexander-Arnold) and Joe Gomez managed to experience it as well because it was special."
Liverpool would have won more league titles had it not been coming up against Manchester City, who has since been found guilty of large-scale financial cheating.
It remains to be seen what the punishment will be. Manchester City has appealed the decision and maintains its innocence.
Robertson returned to Liverpool with Tottenham early in his Spurs career when the pair were drawn together in the Carabao Cup.
"Yeah, it was strange," he said a few weeks later. "Obviously, I looked at the fixtures when they first came out, you look at Liverpool away, and it was December.
Get Liverpool's new 2026/27 home kit
Liverpool FC have launched their new home kit for the 2026/27, inspired by iconic adidas strip worn during the club's 1989/90 title-winning campaign.
"I'm thinking I’m quite happy with that; I can get my feet under the table with Tottenham.
"But no, it was great, you know what I mean? In terms of the reception I got off the home fans. It was a long time there, and to go back and be in another color but still get that reception, it was nice."
Robertson will return to Liverpool again just before Christmas when the Reds host Spurs in the Premier League. Andoni Iraola's men will play Tottenham again away from home at the end of February.
