Russell Martin answers biggest Leicester City critics with decision that could change everything

Russell Martin switched formations and gave his players license to play in Leicester City's win over Doncaster Rovers

Russell Martin

Russell Martin and Leicester City have given themselves some breathing room with a win over Doncaster Rovers. The 2-1 victory in response to the Peterborough United defeat has eased the pressure on Martin and his players at the perfect time.

The Foxes came into the game against Grant McCann's team with more pressure than ever. The defeat to Robbie Savage's Peterborough side, and the manner in which it happened, resulted in calls for Martin to be sacked after just eight games, but the former Southampton and Rangers boss continues to have support inside the club.

After a nervy opening 20 minutes, Leicester took control of proceedings and scored at the perfect time through John Lundstram's volley. Kamari Doyle then showed why he was brought into the team with a well-taken effort to double City's lead.

Warren O'Hora's unfortunate own goal in the 84th minute set up an anxious finish at the King Power Stadium, but Leicester remained calm to see out the win, albeit against a very lacklustre Doncaster.

As it does every year, the football calendar makes October a hectic month for Leicester, with four games coming before November, starting at Bromley on Tuesday night. Saturday's win over Doncaster will mean little if they fail to win at Hayes Lane.

"I'm really pleased we've got a lot of games coming up," Martin told LeicestershireLive before the Doncaster win. "We should have more points than we have, but we haven't, so we have to get on with it and move forward.

"We need to pick up as many points as we possibly can. That starts tomorrow, so the focus is only on tomorrow and then we'll prepare for Bromley after that, what we need and what we need to improve on after tomorrow."

Criticism directed at Martin has centred on his refusal to change things up. Even during his short spell in the Midlands, the City boss has been criticised for sticking to his fluid 4-1-4-1 formation, but he changed things against Doncaster and proved his critics wrong.

John Lundstram

For the first time, Leicester moved to a back three with two different wing-backs. Harry Souttar came back into the squad to join Caleb Okoli and O'Hora in the defence with Luke Thomas and Will Alves deployed on the wing. The change allowed Martin to pack the midfield, with Lundstram, Doyle, Sammy Braybrooke and Louis Page all offering different things.

The team news sprang a surprise on many, but the change worked and Leicester ultimately looked better at the back. Just like they did in the win over Stockport, City had less possession as Martin would prefer (54%), but they prevented Doncaster from creating much threat.

The away side had 15 shots, one more than Leicester, but recorded an xG of just 0.60 - the lowest figure recorded by any Leicester opponent apart from MK Dons - and managed only 26 touches in City's box. After some shambolic defending last time out, the Foxes were better in their own box.

At the other end, Leicester continued to pose a threat and get into dangerous positions. Emil Riis was incredibly unfortunate not to grab another goal in the first half, Harry Souttar's header hit the post and Braybrooke came close twice. In the first half alone, City had a handful of decent opportunities and played with confidence.

Russell Martin

While it was not the prettiest of games, Leicester got the job done. The new task is now building on it and they have the perfect opportunity to do so at Bromley, 22nd in League One, on Tuesday night. In fact, all of City's next three opponents are below them in the table.

Building on yesterday's win is a must for City and Martin. The Foxes boss has shown his willingness to adapt his tactics, and the players have shown they are fighting for each other. It is now on them to make it two league wins in a row for the first time since November last year.
