Frank Bruno Names The Biggest Puncher He Ever Shared The Ring With: “I Still Feel The Right Hand”

Frank Bruno had a storied career in the heavyweight division and fought plenty of the division’s biggest ever names.

The popular Londoner transcended the sport and famously had four attempts at the world title, winning only the last one against Oliver McCall over 12 rounds in 1995, before losing the belt to Mike Tyson in his last fight in 1996.

Before that, he lost by knockout to the American in 1989, as well as to fellow Brit and eventual undisputed champion Lennox Lewis, while also suffering setbacks earlier in his career against Tim Witherspoon and James ‘Bonecrusher’ Smith

In conversation with Soul Ceramic, Bruno was asked about the man who hit him hardest. He swerved all the more obvious names and instead went with a lesser-known boxer he faced in the early stages of his career.

“Of all of them I’d have to say Floyd ‘Jumbo’ Cummings. I can still feel the right hand he gave me in 1983.”

Cummings was an American heavyweight whose late start in professional boxing made him an unlikely contender. He only turned professional at 29 in 1979 but managed to he quickly build a reputation as a fearsome puncher by winning 15 fights, 13 of them by knockout.

His biggest night came in 1981, when he faced former world champion Joe Frazier in Chicago and fought to a controversial 10-round draw and it was in October 1983 that he fought Bruno at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

For much of the fight it looked like he might be on for what would have been a famous upset but was then stopped by a seventh-round TKO. He finished with a record of 15 wins, 6 losses and 1 draw.
